Can you share some Nissen fundoplication success stories?

Posted by aliceorangebike @aliceorangebike, Nov 5, 2019

I’ve read a number of posts from people who are unhappy with the results of their Nissen fundoplication surgeries. I am considering having the surgery and would like to hear from people who are happy with their surgical outcomes. A recent New England Journal of Medicine article reported that two thirds of people are very satisfied with their Nissen outcomes. Do any of these people participate in these posts?

Never was told about dumping syndrome ! It's totally ridiculous what I've been going through the last 6 months. At surgery ( April 15th ) I was 243 pnds. I'm male, 5-11. Now at 193 pnds. Can't hardly eat anything, even liquids not comfortable going down . My primary has me back on liquid diet . I'm in constant stomach pain, sometimes the cramping is unbearable. Nausea, bloating, explosive diarrhea, hot flashes, heart palpitations, loud rumbling stomach, not possible to vomit after nissen fundoplication and hiatal hernia surgery. When I do eat I hafta stay close to bathroom, pretty much runs straight through me. It's affected every part of my life ! I see surgeon in couple days , looking like I'll probably be getting 2nd opinion !

Hey did the palpitations stop and how are you doing now

As I am reading all of these comments I am convinced this surgery is a disaster. I was told my gastro I need a nissen fundoplication. I have a close friend who had it done and after 5 years has same problem. My hernia is large I have silent reflux. Pain constantly in upper abdomen. I can not consent to this surgery but don’t know what to do. It seems like not a lot of options that work for this problem.

Last May I had a Hiatal Hernia repair and Tippet fundiplication. It was a large hiatal hernia that was causing my stomach to enter my diaphragm. It was dangerous and caused sever pain at random times. The hernia was repaired laproscopically and my stomach was returned to the correct position while the hernia was closed with mesh and sutures.

At the same time, my doctor did a Tippet fundiplication. It is different then the traditional one in that the fundus is wrapped 270 degrees around the lower esophageal sphincter instead of 360 degrees around it. This allows me to burp normally and totally eliminated acid reflux and the need for antacids.

This was life changing surgery for me. It was a total success and I am free of all pain and can eat and drink anything I want normally.

Hello! You are not alone. I so feel your pain! Everything and more is still happening to me... 5 years later. Unfortunately I have to just suffer now. (I have no health insurance after I was forced to quit my 36 year long job due to recovery issues.) My local hospital gave me 6 months of financial aid recently because now something bulges out under my front ribs when I sneeze, cough hard or bend over too long. It hurts more than labor and I have to immediately be flat on my back pushing it back in. Then very sore for a day or two there. Am afraid it is gonna bulge out and pinch and stay out. Two Drs said I had a hernia & sent me to a surgeon who pretty much told me he didnt feel a hernia and blamed it on sutures. SUTURES?? I ended up crying... begging him to help me. He reluctantly ordered a couple of tests which showed nothing. Then covid hit and appointments were cancelled. A month after the last test I had to call and request an appointment in person. After discussing more of my past surgeries, he flat out told me nothing can be done and maybe I should see a nutritionist and get a colonoscopy. He blamed everything on adhesions and that no surgeon would ever go in there. The cure is the cause.
Throughout the past 15 years worth of surgeries I have no gall bladder. Had a 5 lb messenteric abdominal cyst removed through open surgery. Then developed incisional hernias the whole length of the 8" incision. The solution was to implant mesh. (All these years later I learn its the bad mesh, made with hulahoop materials, which now a huge lawsuit ensues nationwide.) Anyways... that led to a hiatal hernia, then Nissen fundoplication, which broke down in 2 years, also have dysphagia. Then a takedown of the Nissen into a toupet fundoplication. Both surgeries included 2 hours of cutting through adhesions to get to stomach. So... he figures that after 5 years I am loaded with adhesions and he wont do it.
Now what? I am starving slowly. My starting weight was 210. I now weigh 104. I can lose 3 pounds just gardening in the hot sun. I have no muscles, no fat, no energy. Food is the enemy. It hates me. Everything gives me a stomach ache. You never know when it will attack from within... that one more bite... and that dumping... AAauuugggaahhh!
I hate this. My next try at feeling better will be that maybe I can go to Mayo. But without health insurance or a job... fat chance I will get to go. Please keep me in the loop... on the chance that you find help and relief. I wish you the best. We deserve better. I was PROMISED this would fix me. All trust is gone... especially when he left his practice 4 months later and they wouldnt tell me why. Quack? I am only 59 and have so much more to give... I just need to stop dwindling away. Thank you for reading my ramblings.

I'm so very sorry this happened to you. Hang in there, and I hope that somehow you can go to Mayo. I'm dealing with Quacks on every level in Chicago. Afraid to let anyone touch me! I want to go to Mayo, too.

Have you thought about the Linx procedure?

REPLY

I have a Nissen procedure scheduled for early December. I was really excited about it because I thought finally, my horrific GERD will be a thing of the past.
However, all I find online from people is that it literally destroyed their life and health.
Why would anyone get this done with such an awful outcome for so many people?
Anyone here have ANY positive outcome to share?

No, just another horror story. Mine was done 3 years ago. Now I am having a lot of problems as I have a ‘slipped Nissen’. I was going to have a ‘redo’ surgery, but have decided to go the diet/ meditation route instead. I wish you the best of luck. If you are having your surgery laparoscopically done you might fare better than I did with an open surgery.

Ugh. Thanks for letting me know. It is down as "anticipated lapararoscopic surgery, possible open once in surgery", so I don't think they will actually know which is being done until they are in there. I am probably going to cancel it. It just sucks so much, because if I DON'T do it, I am on PPI's for the rest of my life, which I have been reading can lead to a shorter life span, alzheimer's, etc. And if I DON'T take them, I risk esophogeal cancer.
Can they not come up with any better surgeries than one that destroys so many lives? I don't get it. Why even perform this surgery if it is this risky?

Are you keeping to a strict low acid diet? Does that help with your reflux? Do you have Barrett's esophagus? I would only have surgery only if it's the last resort. Some of these people on this site have had horrible results.

Yes, but it doesn't help because anything I eat can cause reflux, since it is hiatal hernia involved. I don't have Barrett's (yet) but there are definite changes to my tissue. I know, I think I might postpone this. It seems like people have better luck with Linx? I am not sure if I am a candidate, but it might be worth a look into. My mom keeps saying that I'm only seeing the few horror stories and I'm like, "no, you don't understand. It is CRAZY how many people have horror stories, and it's not reversible! So if it's messed up, I'm stuck!"
