Has anyone tried the HF10 Spinal Cord Stimulation Device?

Posted by patrick17 @patrick17, Nov 21, 2018

Has anyone tried a device called HF10 ? It’s a device which stimulates your spinal cord to help relieve back and leg pain. After a trial period of about a week, if the patient is achieving good results the device is implanted in the person. My pain management doctor has recommended it to me for arm and hand nerve pain. I would like to hear from anyone who has used this device and especially from anyone who has used it for arm and hand pain. Thank you.

That’s really good that you do that, and I bet it’s extremely helpful. When your life is completely dominated by pain, normal life seems to be like it’s all on the other side of the river And you are on the wrong side looking over. When you get over there it’s not common to look back at us still trying to get through a day on the other side . So thanks .

Thanks for your comments. I was told Abbott has a new system called "Proclaim".

I’m not aware of that. I’ll have to look it up. They’ve given up trying
spinal cord stim on me. the next thing I’m going to try is peripheral nerve
stimulation. However it’s not readily available in Canada so I have to wait
til covid is over and come down to the states.might be a while .

Thank YOU for understanding! I just ask if people find things that work, they share their findings with other people. You never know whose life you may change for the better! Sometimes people just need to know someone has been there before, someone who “gets it”, someone who can give them hope. My condition was not common and I was so very grateful to the few people who were able to comprehend what I was going through.
For some, painful memories are best swept under the rug. I understand that, too. Sometimes I’d like to forget what I went through, because it lasted many years and involved being not believed by some health care professionals, accused of exaggerating my pain, fighting with my insurance company, etc. It does bring up bad memories but I know other people in my (former) situation may not have the knowledge I (now) have and think sharing that is more valuable than my anxiety.
Always keep the faith and never give up! Cheers!

My husband had the ST. Jude/Abbott Proclaim--but the experience was not good. We don't know if the device was bad or if the implantation was not good. A friend down the street has the Proclaim and it has changed her life. In my husband's case the implant was done by a pain doctor, not a neurosurgeon. The reps could never program the thing to help him and he began to have increasing back and leg pain. Had the device removed--leads were out of place and broken out of their silicone sheaths. The generator migrated from its pocket--causing more discomfort. He is in increasing discomfort. Considering the Nevro HF10--but must be implanted by a neurosurgeon.

Hello @gran61, Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I'm sorry to hear your husband did not find relief with the Proclaim device and is still having increasing pain and discomfort. Thank you for sharing his experience with the device and details of how the implant was done. You mentioned he is considering the Nevro HF10 but only if done by a neurosurgeon. Has he consulted with a neurosurgeon yet to see if it is an option for him?

Hubby is in pain management and the doc sent him to a neurosurgeon to see if there was any possible surgery that might help. Surgery was not suggested, but the neurosurgeon suggested the Boston Scientific stimulator. The pain management doc prefers the HF10. I am assuming that a neurosurgeon will implant it. We believe that his bad experience with the Abbott/St. Jude might be because a neurosurgeon did NOT implant the device. Waiting for next appt. with pain management. There are other issues--"loose" hardware from a fusion in 2007.

My husband had a Medtronic stimulator implanted about 5 yrs ago. It has never really helped relieve his back pain. We are going back to the pain management dr to discuss the NERVO HF10. Any comments? Thanks

Hello. I've had chronic back pain for 46 years. I was told in 1983 that I required back surgery to have two titanium rods wired to my spine with a 50/50 chance of walking after the operation. I told the GP/Chiropractor that I was walking NOW thankyou very much. He said if I didn't get something done I'd be in a wheelchair by 2006. I'm not in a wheel chair and still walking. I never took pain killers either. My experience is that there are many non evasive treatments for back pain, but there is not anything that eliminates the pain 100% forever. Pain Management has worked for me, but that requires individual diligence moment by moment, day by day managing stress, stretching, light physical exercise, diet, rest, etc. Non evasive treatments can reduce the intensity of the pain, but a one time shot for elimination of pain forever, I doubt it. Not knowing the cause of your husbands back pain I could be wrong, but I always look at these things with cautious optimism. The biggest negative besides the chronic pain are the psychological side affects of long term chronic pain which are attributed to the fight or flight syndrome which in turn can cause anxiety, depression and paranoia. I don't take meds for this either. I self monitor my thoughts, feelings and ideas, and practice counter relaxation techniques like deep breathing and positive self talk to not attach myself to negative emotions that are likely a result of the pain. Essentially, it's all up to me to be self aware, mindful, and in the moment as much as possible. I'm doing a lot better than 40 years ago, but to say life is not still a daily struggle would be disingenuous. I wish your husband relief, but be informed as much as possible.

Hello @pita99 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I see that @olaf49 has already responded to you with some information based on their experience.

Other members such as @scruffy1 and @kthychrls11 have shared they have had the NERVO HF10 and may be able to provide some more information to you.

When is your husband's appointment?
