COVID vaccines and neuropathy

Posted by cue @cue, Feb 15, 2021

I am 85 with small fiber neuropathy that is getting worse. My neurologist thought it would be a good idea for me to wait with the covid vaccine and not be first in line to see how it affected other people with neuropathy. Probably because it is a new technology. Has anyone had a problem with neuropathy after receiving the vaccine? If so, which vaccine?

Hi Hank, my 2nd dose was last Saturday. No Sxs except for a lot of pain and a little swell at the site. Then, on Monday it started to itch and my muscles became extremely weak and painful if I tried to use them. Other than that, no Sxs. So strange how this didn't happen until two days after my shot of Moderna. Please forgive if this is a repeat. I have 383 emails in my neuropathy group. Oy vei!

@sunnyflower Hi, Sunny, how are you feeling today in relation to your 2nd dose of the vaccine?

@busch @sunnyflower When I had my first vaccination with Moderna last month, I was given a card, COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card put out by HHS and CDC. It states, "You can report possible adverse reaction following COVID-19 vaccination to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) at vaers.hhs.gov

Hello, thank you for your concern. I have the same information but I am doing better today so I'm not concerned about it. I did not have a fever just general malaise which is to be expected rather nothing out of the normal. Take good care and thanks again, Sunny flower

Hello, @sunnyflower, @avmcbellar, @athenalee, @artscaping , @everyone else....I'm so sorry you've had a tough response to the 2nd shot, Sunny. I did too. I wrote about it in Feb after I got the 2nd Moderna shot and had a very rough 18 hours. It began after about 4-6 hours, with extreme fatigue, all over pain, bones/muscles/head......everything hurt pretty badly. I was purely miserable for 18 hours, with a fever for several hours. I got so ill I went back to bed, which I never do unless I'm really not feeling well. I slept for several hours, sweat profusely and woke up fever free and almost pain free. It took me a day or so to regain my strength and be able to function somewhat normally.

I hope you have far less reaction and it gets better NOW! No fun, but I reminded myself this was for my health, my body was making antibodies to help me stay healthy and beat any possible Covid19 infection. That thinking helped me get through those hours. My good friend just got her 1st shot, Phizar, has some arm discomfort, feels drained and fatigued, resting, no fever. I had no 1st shot reaction.

Sunny....I will love you forever, my friend! I just ordered and have ready to put together my very own posh, hot pink, rollater w/black and white zebra pattern seat bag and back bag!!!! I've been looking for this for years!!!! I refused to use a walker forever, but when forced to get one, it had to be red. all they had was burgundy, and now everyone has one.....and it's boring~ I'm up town, hot mama now, my friend. Love it. AND, got glasses w/prisms for double vision. Kate Spade, big black w/red roses, sunglasses.....Tiffany black weird shape with silver glitter on bottom and gold arms. Am I investing in a fun rest of my life? I had to let you know since we seem to be sisters in bling!

Blessings, feel well and be safe and look stunning as we toddle around! elizabeth

I received my 2nd Pfizer COVID vaccine Feb 26th and the only side effect I had was extreme fatigue the following day. My wife had the same symptoms after getting her 2nd shot last Thursday.

@johnbishop, I welcomed the news about the side effects of your second Pfizer vaccine. We just received our first and I will not be afraid of that second dose. Extreme fatigue for a day is a small price to pay for protection. Let us hope everyone receives the vaccine. We need to stop this virus so we can resume our lives and enjoy each other's company! Thanks for posting this message of hope. Take care, @joybringer1

It’s been 12 days since my second Pfizer vaccine. (I did report the reaction to Pfizer after the 1st shot. They recorded it but claimed there was no indications of any neurological problems from the vaccine ). My neuropathy sx have dialed back some but are still substantially worse than before the shots. I have also had brain fog since the 1st shot as well. Since I have non-length dependent neuropathy I have wondered if the brain fog could be a neuropathic sx as well. I just hope the sx continue to dial back.

Unfortunately, I think the jury is still out. I mentioned previously that my neuropathy symptoms increased after the first Pfizer shot, but I decided to go ahead not knowing if it was truly the vaccine or just the normal development of symptoms for my body. Plus, I am fully in support of getting the vaccine to help our world get out of this pandemic. I had my second shot on Thursday. Normal minor flu like response, however, my neuropathy, plus joint and muscle pain, has increased again. I hope that some researchers are going to investigate these occurrences, as this second hike in symptoms is even worse than the first. Clearly not everyone is having this sort of reaction, but it seems there are enough of us that it warrants attention.
