uti/yeast infection

Posted by jessisconcerned @jessisconcerned, Jan 7, 2021

i went to the ER not too long ago, got tested for a uti, and it came back negative. the nurse told me i had a yeast infection, she didn’t run any other test or even do any sort of examination... is this normal?

@jessisconcerned Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, a place to give and get support.

So that I can understand and connect you with members that may be able to help may I clarify some details?

You went to the emergency room for what you thought was a UTI. They took a urine UTI sample and it came back negative. They said that while you do not have a UTI you do have a yeast infection. You are wondering if this is normal, as they did not run any other tests. Did I get that right?

Can you describe your symptoms and the ER's recommendation for treatment and follow-up care?

yes, the uti came back negative, and they assumed i had a yeast infection though they did not run any test or examinations.
it’s been about four days now, they told me to get cream
that was available at the pharmacy, but it made it worse. Then i tried the one time pill version that is suppose to get rid of the infection, but there has been no results. i took that two days ago.

Hello @jessisconcerned,

Let me add my welcome to you as you have recently joined Connect. I would be curious, as is Erika, as to what your symptoms are now. Do you have burning when you urinate or lack of control of your urine? Any back pain?

Has your medical provider offered to repeat the urinalysis to see if is still negative?

@jessisconcerned I am not medically trained but it seems that all that was ruled out was a UTI. If it is indeed a yeast infection it is one that is resistant to the treatment suggested. Have you considered going to your primary care, OBGYN, or other facility that deals with women's health?

I had a uti and weeks following my doctor thought I had a yeast infection. She tested me but gave me the meds anyway and she said even if I took the anti fungal they wouldn’t be harmful to me if i didn’t have one. I took the pill and got the call a few days later it came back negative anyway.
