Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: What has helped you?

Good morning, Bride. Wanted to follow up briefly on your recent post re: Vitamin D.

As you're likely aware, I too had a little bout of BPPV earlier this year. Since I've been supplementing with D3 for the past eight years (4-6K IU daily)... and I'm active several times a week outside (live in FL)... and eat a well-balanced diet, I thought it'd be useful to share this info. Also, the couple of times I've had my D3 level checked through the years, it's never been deficient.

The above leads me to conclude that there are other causes for BPPV, while in certain instances, low D may play a part.

I was curious if anyone began suffering from vertigo following surgery? I broke my ankle and had surgery Dec 31. Vertigo began around Jan 3rd. A neurologist friend thinks it may have developed due to the positioning of my head while under anesthesia. (3 hr surgery). My vertigo is not terrible, no spinning sensation, just a wooziness feeling & unsteady feeling as if on a boat. I am hoping once I am off crutches & walking, this will go away. (Have had this off balance feeling for 50 days now.). No nausea, no headaches etc., i can drive, but I have not done anything physical due to my ankle healing & being on crutches. I did try the Epley maneuver 3 times with a PT but got zero relief. My neurologist friend says the dislodged calcium crystals might be in a different inner ear canal that requires another maneuver, not Epley. Has anyone gotten vertigo post surgery? Its too much of a coincidence. Thanks very much!

Hi, sorry not quite an answer but just been told I may have bppv over the phone as cannot see any ent doctor in person. Years on and off of tinnitus and getting worse or rather more constant; not a person to get dizzy; have a laundry list of other illnesses: last Saturday am awoke and culdnt hear, the dizziness was sudden and not swirly or twisty but like my brain and inside head being jumped on or pressure or twisted and the double vision: well I am used to occasional double vision as on eye drops, glaucoma etc., but this was as if eyes were out of my control and each eye seeing something different. I crawled on floor to husbands room, had two attacks lasting a minute or so, but that was enough, then emerge and had one there. Doctor ruled out stroke etc. and said take Tylenol. That;s it that's all. So just hung up from an online doctor who doesnt think its tinnitus but sending me a pamphlet on bppv and said check internet.
Re your episode after surgery; I did spend last few nights with heated rice bag around my ear and right side of neck as had tooth extracted and so sore also sore throat; so could my neck have been in odd position as I slept... as yours was... also spent over an hour in dentist chair week before with head slightly tilted towards dentist... so last 2 nights slept on my back and may never sleep on my side again!!!! Horrible experience, would rather have another baby than another one of these attacks!!! J.

Has anyone had crystals of ears treatment by therapists?

Have you contacted an Otolaryngologist to see about an adjustment?

Yes, I have, and it works. Sometimes if I sleep or move a certain way, I will experience extreme vertigo and nausea to the point that I am non-functional. PT has fixed my problem on three occasions. The result is immediate although I do have to be careful how I move my head for several days afterward to give the crystals time to settle back where they belong.

A Physical Therapist or an ENT physician can resolve this using the Eppley Maneuver which settles the crystals. You can also do it yourself following instructions on UTube, but I would recommend a professional for the first adjustment. The maneuver feels very dramatic, but doesn’t last long, but it seems that way, especially when you don’t know what to expect.

I had the same thing. My primary care doctor fixed mine in her office. Haven't had any problems since then.
