What are Tests and Medications for Fibromyalgia?

Posted by Sundance(RB) @sundance6, Dec 28, 2020

I've had two different diagnoses over the last two years. One was for Lyme Disease which was diagnosed by sumptoms, the other for Fibromyalgia.
I've read everything on Lyme Disease. Lyme and Fibromyalgia are very close symptom wise. I have read where there are no tests and medications for Fibromyalgia. Messaged my PCP today and he says there is so such things.
I just ordered a book from Mayo on Fibro. Can anyone help me?
Thanks,
Sundance (RB)

@sundance6 - It is not unusual for Fibromyalgia to coexist with illnesses such as Lyme arthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis- two causes of pain and different treatments.
Fibromyalgia does not have any specific test for diagnosis. However, on physical exam there are typical pressure points on the body that are painful when pressure is applied. A certain number of them indicate a Fibro diagnosis. Fibro is also a disease of exclusion- testing negative for typical inflammatory diseases.
I recommend finding a well known Fibromyalgia clinic. The illness can be handled without strong pain meds.
I have fibro and my sister and mother too. One of my daughters was diagnosed at 15, a son at 10. Both went to a Pediatric Rheumatology clinic that also specialized in Fibro. My daughter had it worse, stress in college caused flare-ups. She was given IV Lidocaine by pain management clinic and it worked wonders for a while. Both are adults now- now and then they get flare ups, but have learned how to manage. Fibromyalgia is also a type of sleep disorder- non refreshed sleep. Proper sleep training is also important to get good sleep and less pain.

Very interesting! I understand that you live in Australia and that Lyme disease exists there. I lived and practiced in the north east part of US- where Lyme disease is so common now- still tricky to diagnose at times. Lyme disease is included in in a number of evaluations for neurological and rheumatic diseases.
As a curiosity- other father of a friend was one of the first patients diagnosed with Lyme Disease. He lived in Old Lyme, CT. He presented with encephalitis.

Most patients with Lyme disease and human immunodeficiciencyvirus infection, tend to showan increasedtendency to develop Fibromyalgia, This is why I use several ecm formula, to increase elastin and calogen, assisting with tissue growth for patients as wel as PEA and Ha with Alcar

Hi @rooster42, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You will see that I moved your post to a conversation about fibromyalgia that has many members discussing tests and medications.

Can you help us relate to your situation by sharing more information? Were you diagnosed with Fibromyalgia? Are you suffering with pain or other symptoms or seeking treatment?
