Shoulder Bursitis

Posted by happyat76 @happyat76, Nov 20, 2020

I have been diagnosed with Shoulder Bursitis and three inflamed tendons. My Dr. has given me Tylenol #3 for the pain and she also suggested I get physiotherapy. The Tylenol does absolutely nothing for my pain. I have been using a heating pad and also putting ice on my shoulder and upper arm. I would very much like to hear from anyone who is suffering from this painful condition. I can't sleep, can't raise my right arm, everything hurts my arm and shoulder. I have been like this for over two weeks and I am not getting any better. Should I rest my arm, or should I do exercises? I am at a loss as to what to do for myself. BTW I am 79 years of age. My Dr. has not been much of a help.

I would suggest that if its easy to access you see a physio for advice even if you only see once to see whether exercise or rest is best. Sometimes taping the joint helps to support or alter position again physio can help. Is tylenol like paracetemol if so surely you need some sort of anti inflamatories

Hi, I began having similar problems. I couldn’t lay on either side at night and in the morning I couldn’t raise my arm enough to put eye drops in. An orthopedic doctor gave me similar diagnosis and gave me steroid shot and anti inflammatory med. Since then, I have had physical therapy for my shoulders. It is important to keep your shoulder moving or it will become “frozen”. If you are comfortable with the diagnosis, a doctor can order pt. I still have pain and stiffness which I attribute to arthritis but the exercise helps with mobility. I can now lay on one side but experience some discomfort by morning. Moving it helps. I also use ice and heat. I hope this helps you. I was 63ish when I started having trouble putting my jacket on. Best of luck to you.

Thank you so much for your reply. Tylenol with codeine I believe is the same as Paracetemol. Both are used for pain, headaches, etc. I will make an appointment with a physiotherapist for sure on Monday. Like you said even one time may be enough, just to find out if I should rest or exercise my arm and shoulder. I cannot take anti-inflammatories, they make my stomach bleed. Thanks again for your help.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my message. I am so sorry to hear you have basically the same problem and pain that I am experiencing. It is awful, I can't even do up my bra by myself. Actually, both of my arms and shoulders are bothering me now, but my right side is very painful. You are right about sleeping, I can't sleep on either side, so I end up on my back every night. I have a pretty hard mattress and was wondering if it may be contributing to my pain. I do love this mattress though. As suggested to me, I am going to see a physiotherapist next week just to find out what I should be doing, exercise or not etc. I have heard the term frozen shoulder and will be looking it up on Web MD. I surely don't want this to happen. I do love the ice and heat and they give me some relief, if only for a while. Thanks again. I

Yes I wondered whether anti-inflammatories upset you I'm not very good with them hopefully Lee a physio will be able to help you even if you only see one time I'm I'm assuming you're in America is expensive here in UK NHS is barely available and private about £80 an our sometimes physios apply a bit of tape that you can keep on for a few days even if you shower it provides support good luck

I was experiencing the same pain, had physical therapy which helped, had a cortisone injection which helped short term, and eventually had an MRI to discover I had a torn biceps tendon and rotator cuff tear. Had surgery in May and went through PT after surgery to rehab shoulder. Was experiencing similar pain in my other shoulder, same protocol and had surgery on my other shoulder two weeks ago. Your pain sounds identical to mine. I would recommend starting with an experienced Physical therapist to start. Many people have success and never need surgery. I wasn’t so lucky.....surgery is a long road to recovery but I have no regrets as I couldn’t have lived with the pain I had for the rest of my life.

Hi Carol,
I very much appreciate your reply. You are correct in saying that our symptoms are alike. I am going to see a Physiotherapist tomorrow (Thursday) to find out what he thinks is wrong with me. I keep telling my Dr. that the pain is where the muscle is in both of my arms. along with the shoulder pain. I really don't think she gets this at all. Yes, my shoulder hurts very much and I can't sleep on either side. just like you. I do not want to have any surgery, but I do believe my problem is identical to yours. I have the same symptoms are you had and have. I will let you know after tomorrow, what this physiotherapist says is wrong with me.

I think the tingling in my fingers may well come from my shoulder which aches and is not helped by the fact that I often lie on that side because my hip and back problems make getting into a comfortable position really hard. Unfortunately the position that is most comfortable for my shoulder and produces tingling in my fingers is to have my hand and and arm vertically above my head which is not desperately convenient

<p>Pain in shoulder and upper arm</p><p>I have been told that I have Bursitis in my right shoulder. This pain is excruciating sometimes and I can't lift anything. It has become a real problem. Now my Dr. says it may be a pinched nerve, so I had x-rays this morning on my shoulders and spine. My Dr. has not given me anything for this pain and it is keeping me awake at night and I cannot function well in the daytime.</p>

@happyat76 That sounds terrible. May I ask why your provider has not given you pain medications?

I added your conversation to a related topic that you posted before so could connect with similar members like @suz55 @lotsofpain @carolasc in a central location. You said that it may be a pinched nerve or bursitis.

Below I have linked a previous discussion related to a pinched nerve.

Do you think the pinched nerve discussions are more relevant to your current situation?
