The Chat Room: A place to talk about this and that

Posted by John, Volunteer Mentor @johnbishop, Oct 3, 2020

Have you discovered mutual likes or common points of interest with other members while talking about the medical stuff? Sometimes these discoveries take us off topic.

Welcome to The Chat Room.
This is a place to talk about this and that over the backyard fence so to speak. To invite a fellow member or members to the chat room, simply mention their @username. They will get an email to join the conversation here.

Who will you invite to chat?

Hi @sunnyflower @jakedduck1 and @jesfactsmon, wow, you guys had quite the discussion yesterday. Yesterday was my day for unplugging. It was a glorious day here and I went for a long walk admiring fall gardens and the changing colors.

So let me see if I can address your tech needs and help make using Connect easier, especially for superusers like yourselves.

1. See the Get Started Guide here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/get-started-on-connect/
This guide is available on every page on Connect. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see it in the footer. It gives you step-by-step instructions for the main tasks most people perform on Connect. If something is missing, send me a message using the Contact form and we'll get it added.

2. Contact form https://connect.mayoclinic.org/contact-a-community-moderator/
The Contact form is likewise to be found in the footer an every page. When you have tech questions, simply fill out the form and I'll give you a hand.

3. About Connect Blog https://connect.mayoclinic.org/page/about-connect/
I also recommend following the About Connect blog. Here we publish monthly Spotlights about members. We also publish updates about Connect, what's new, what's coming and "Tips and How to Use". You can filter by Category to find all the How To Use Tips.

You can bookmark this message for future reference. To bookmark a message, simply click the Bookmark symbol below the message (beside the heart icon). Then go to your profile(https://connect.mayoclinic.org/my-profile/) to see all your bookmarked posts.

This is post 1 of 3. I'll be back with more info. Gotta run to a meeting.

Colleen, in your 1st paragraph, you are not referring to the emails we get right? Remember, my devices are different and I'm not seeing what most are so I have to ask. Thx, Sunny @jesfactsmon. @jakedduck1

@sunnyflower, I'm not referring to the email notifications, but rather the Connect website itself here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/
90% is identical on mobile devices as on desktop and laptop computers. I have noted where there are slight differences on where to find things, for example the menu. You see the same things that everyone sees who is using a mobile device.

@colleenyoung
So the search features are more advanced using a desk/laptop?
Thank you,
Jake

That's correct, @jakedduck1. The search has filter capabilities on desktop/laptop only. The search improvements coming at the beginning of the year will be for all devices.

Colleen, I know we can click on a person's Mayo name at the top of emails and replies to get to their personal profile page and send them a private message. This also gets us to the or one of the main Mayo Connect pages from where all the other options can be accessed. Yes? I think I've answered my own question which is what is the easiest way to access one of the main Connect pages where from we can access everything. That was mainly all I wanted to know. I'm just too lazy to have to get out of where I am on Connect, to have to type the URL into a new search, to get to a main page where all my options are. Geesh, my cognitive abilities are so compromised by this Gabapentin! I used to be one of the sharpest tools in the shed but now those tools are dull and numb. At least my rationale and logic are still intact. At least I don't give up on trying to find an easier way! I think I just said that on the blog recently somewhere. Please forgive the repeat. Take care everyone, Sunny @jesfactsmon @jakedduck1

@sunnyflower don't be too hard on yourself. Trouble shooting technical issues through online discussions is incredibly frustrating and laborious 🙂

Hey, this is turning out to be a veritable lovefest.

I'm in favor of any/all lovefests!

I also think this has been a very useful discussion. I learned some things (and need to learn more). My thanks to everyone here.

Wow, 100,000 members? Do you ever deactivate anyone, such as someone who has not posted in say ten years?

This set of 3 posts has a LOT of info in it. I have learned as much today as any day since I started back in January. For example, I had no idea so much was accessible from the BOTTOM of a page. I hardly ever payed any attention to the bottom. That was my own myopic fault! But thanks for pointing it out. Also, I am going to reread your 3 posts.

Overall I think Connect is an AMAZING utility. Pretty sophisticated in a lot of important ways. However, I think the one thing that has truly frustrated me the most is the thing which you mention as likely to be addressed early next year, i.e. the current inability to access any user's historical posts. At least I hope that is what's coming. Often I think to myself, "This person seems interesting, I wonder if they detailed their full story back early on in their time on Connect?" This functionality will reduce the number of times a user will have to repeat their full story to someone as they soon will be able to provide a link to it from an earlier post. That will actually be an exciting improvement!

Thanks Colleen, your 3 info posts are VERY appreciated. A great effort! Hank
