2nd opinion on my mother's Lung Cancer case (adenocarcinoma)
I am looking for a second opinion for my mother's adenocarcinoma. She is 83 years old but active and fully functioning both physically and mentally. Today she was told that surgery is out of the questions. She will now be offered immune therapy (Denmark). I hope to find answers to the best possible treatment to give her in order for her to have more years to live . Can someone advice me if I can get such a 2. opinion from the Mayo Clinic and how that would work?

@camillaengelshardt - Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I know how tough it is when one of our parents ill. I was my mother's caretaker. Is your mom living out of the US now? Was there a reason given for no surgery?
She lives in Denmark. Reasons for no surgery is a spread to a nearby lymph and they anticipate more damage than good results
Ah. This sounds like what doctors would reasonably recommend in the US too; Treatment before surgery if the cancer has spread.
I'm going to ask our director, @colleenyoung to answer if it's possible to get a second opinion for someone not living in the US. Would she consider coming to the US for treatment?
I guess that given that her prognosis will bad here, she would. Preferably we would be able to have a 2. Opinion and carry it out here. So far they have not yet given any prognosis. We are waiting for that
Ok, let's wait to see what Colleen has to say. Hang in there. How are your mom's spirits? Does she have help at home? Is a biopsy planned?
I have same type of cancer. Surgery ruled out as well as radiation.I had chemo treatments Of Carboplatin, Pembrolizumeb, Pemetrexed And Keytruda. from March till November last year every 21 days. Got sick (Throw up) For 7-10 days after treatment. Finally I took a 21 day break and like the feeling of getting stronger and not being sick. Went back to Mayo and said I was done with chemo and would just do the Keytruda. Been doing well on just the immune therapy. Only thing I have is blowouts for half a day. Just don’t leave the house that day. Been 10 months and everything is stable at this point. Have been told from the begging this was terminal. As it has spread to stomach and kidney. Just nodules and they have stayed the same. They had to drain a quart of fluid from lung lining as tumor was quite large. This was a very aggressive cancer but has slowed down. I did not have a second opinion felt they knew what they were dealing with and I did not.
@richcolleen My goodness you have really done well comsidering all the treatment you ahve gone through. Were I in your place I would not hesitate to get a second opinion. being here in Texsas, i would choose M.D. Anderson. However, I'm sue here are other places that people also can recommend. I'm glsad the tumors are shrinking. I will be thinking of you and hope you keep us posted about how you are doing and what you choose to do. Blessingd to you.
@camillaengelshardt, I add my welcome. You can find more information about coming to Mayo Clinic as an international patient on this webpage:

Cancer is a top specialty at Mayo Clinic. Once you submit information about your mom, Mayo Clinic specialists review test results, medical history and clinical findings, and discuss with you if there are options to consider beyond what is available in your country, and whether a trip to Mayo Clinic is warranted. Mayo’s goal is to provide the best care each patient needs, but does not want you to incur additional costs for evaluation or travel if there is not care to offer that is different from what your mom is already receiving or being offered.
Camilla, I realize being told that surgery is not possible can be difficult to hear. However surgery is not the only effective treatment option. Take your time to research immunotherapy for lung cancer. Some types of lung cancers respond well to immunotherapy, for example lung tumors with high levels of the protein PD-L1.
Do you know if your mom's cancer has been evaluated for markers like PD-L1, CTLA-4, etc.?
Dear Colleen, Thanks for your reply. I will investigate about the protein, I get back to your via the form if it turns out to make sense. Thanks again!
