Amitriptyline use for neuropathy

Posted by kyc117 @kyc117, Sep 26, 2020

My neurologist prescribed Amitriptyline for me as sleeping has been difficult at times. I have to say it’s been working and I have no side effects. I don’t take it every day. I kind of know now when to take it...if my symptoms are bad during day. Still waiting on nerve biopsy test. It’s been 5 weeks now. Started a new job which keeps me so busy, keeps my mind off things. I wish you all my prayers daily.

@jesfactsmon, @sunnyflower, @helennicola I cant vouch for the sleep improvement aspect but, I have recently switched to Magnesium Glycinate made by Innate Vitality. I take one 500 mg capsule per day. I've noticed an improvement with my constipation from opiods.

I'm hoping to feel relief from muscle cramping but, not yet.

thanks Sunny and Hank for your replies; I was actually responding to Busterbrwns statement regarding her use of magnesium since she said it worked so well for sleep. Helen

@helennicola Helen, I knew you were responding to @bustrbrwn22 but whenever someone mentions something as exciting as magnesium I just get overcome and feel I have to toss in my 2 cents. 😳 I'll try to use more self control going forward. Best, Hank

Hi Helen, thanks for clarifying whose post you were responding to. I believe that info actually shows in the group emails we all receive, above the body of the message. I am still learning and so far I've seen many respond to messages in the public group emails that arrive in our mailboxes. Often, when we go to a response by another person that also comes to our email, by clicking the "View and Reply" field under the messages, we'll see quite a few messages between others and join in. I think the only way to avoid that is to send someone a private message. You probably already know this. For me, the fog is clearing but it has been difficult for me to learn how the blog works. I hope you are doing well today or tolerable at minimum. Warmest wishes, Sunny. 😊

That's great Rachel! I take 200mg of Mag Glycinate, twice daily. Still no improvement falling asleep or with SEVERE muscle tetany which can include the largest muscles in the body; aductor (inner thighs and hamstrings). Those puppies hurt and it can take 15 minutes or so to stretch them out. They are BRUTAL!! Funny I do not get them in the most common places, the Calfs and arches of the foot. The muscles on top of my feet and ankles, toes and fingers are the most frequent and lately have been pretty much every night. I can have them in the day or late afternoon but mostly evening and night and all night. I often have to get up. I'm thinking about upping my dose but have to research how much is safe. Also, even though I am on Morphine and Gabapentin, I still lay there often up to two hours before I can fall asleep. I just don't get it. I know my body really needs asleep. Tired and blesses, Sunnyflower 😊 @hellenicola @jesfactsmon

Linda's experience has been that she has gotten some sleepiness by taking magnesium before bedtime but it's sometimes limited in that effect. She thinks (and it makes sense to me) that after you body gets all it needs of magnesium the effect is drastically reduced. Current literature has women needing about 300 mg/day and men 400 mg/day. But since so many foods contain at least some magnesium that number may be much less in terms of needing from supplementation. Just something to consider. Best, Hank

Since I started Lyrica, I've been falling asleep right away (a blessing since I have struggled with insomnia all my life). When I get muscle cramps, it is relieved by stretching more and drinking more water several times during the day, nothing relieves it immediately; Magnesium made my cramps much worse. Peggy
