Amitriptyline use for neuropathy

Posted by kyc117 @kyc117, Sep 26, 2020

My neurologist prescribed Amitriptyline for me as sleeping has been difficult at times. I have to say it’s been working and I have no side effects. I don’t take it every day. I kind of know now when to take it...if my symptoms are bad during day. Still waiting on nerve biopsy test. It’s been 5 weeks now. Started a new job which keeps me so busy, keeps my mind off things. I wish you all my prayers daily.

@kyc117 I took amitriptyline years ago because of pain from clenching my teeth, because of work stress. Once I left that toxic job, I no longer needed it.

It's one of a long list of meds I've tried more recently, for sfpn, but it didn't help me with my pain. The only medication that's been helping consistently is morphine sulfate contin. It certainly doesn't do the whole job, probably because it's such a low dose, but it takes the edge off. The reason I know it's helping my long term pain is that I tapered off it a while back, and it quickly became clear that my pain is a lot worse without it. Each of us responds in our own way to medications, so there is no one size fits all pill. I hope amitriptyline continues to help you. Let us know the results of your nerve conduction study if you're comfortable doing so.

Jim

My rheumatologist prescribed amitriplyline for me too. I used it for six weeks and yes, I slept better. but during those six weeks I had three separate visual hallucinations.. so be aware... of course I seem to react to most drugs. Now all I can take without getting sick is Benadryl...

This is probably irrelevant to your situation but I have polyneuropathy and I take 600 mg gabapentin 3 times a day. If that does not control the pain or if I have break through pain I take 1/2 of a 25 mg tramadol. I don't like taking an opioid. I used to depend on tramadol exclusively for pain. Then under the supervision of my pain specialist I tapered off almost all of the tramadol and the gabapentin controlled the pain almost completely. But I gradually had to take some tramadol as needed, usually at bedtime or if I overdid exercise. It turns out I usually take 1/2 25 mg tablet once or twice a day. Everyone's experience is different and I am late to this blog so I know very little and understand less.

Actually I am not doing well right now. Most meds make me sick. Last week we discovered that the hydrocodone is now toxic for me. My pharmacist said this can become toxic, so to take one tylenol to see which is causing the headache, nausea and dizziness. I did, and the tylenol is not doing anything bad for me, only some slight dizziness. So tomorrow I call the doctor. Not much is left for me to take. Lots of pain all over my body today, so will move around some, make beds, etc., and then rest a little. Tried to back support belt that helps when it is my low back. But mostly all over pain, moving from one place to another. Many people suffer, so I can do it if I have to.
