Post detached retina surgery followed with cataracts and eye scarring

Posted by bjackie @bjackie, Sep 18, 2020

Hi,
I had emergency detached retina surgery 5 weeks ago. Last week I was told there is now scarring developing along with cataracts. Surgeon know wants to see me every 5 days to check on the progress of the scarring to see if a second surgery is needed now, cataracts to be dealt with later.
I still have 20% of the gas bubble left.Had a buckle which is driving me insane with the itching.
My major concern is will my sight ever be the same down in the future. I presently don't feel safe driving. My vision in the eye is very distorted, blurred and makes me very dizzy.I felt my Dr. Rushed me at the appointment today saying time will tell, too soon to know .I'm not sure if I should be seeking another specialist. Really need feedback from someone whose been in my place.

I am replying only to try to give a small amount of encouragement based on my much simpler detachment issue results. 60-ish yrs old, had cataract laser surgery both eyes, month apart. Month later detached retina (I am sure result of the laser cataract surgery) - about 50% vision black. Emergency laser reattach surgery next day, gas bubble routine. Week or some later (I may not be remembering this heal time right) when could start seeing again, still had about 10% black spot with no vision. I was told it was scare tissue from the laser burnt welding done and there was no telling if it would ever come back. A couple months later I was back to full vision. Now 7 years later, I get short bouts of 10-20% total black spot that lasts a few minutes at a time. I assume it is detachment but it goes back so far, so I just put my head down & relax thru it.

So my take on it is your heavy scarring may get better - you should hope for that I think. Mind over matter works in my world and should work in yours too. Good luck and quick recovery to you!

Hello! I realize this happened to you in 2020. I hope everything worked out for you. My brother is going through a similar situation and I am trying to help navigate through this uncertain time. I understand every case is different; however, I am hoping you had a favorable outcome. Any updates you can share? I would greatly appreciate it, Thank you.
