Sodium or salt alternatives for flavor
If there is already a similar thread please direct me to it. I am struggling with sodium I guess like a diabetic struggles with glucose. But I have a pallet that needs a little bit of action, and believe me, I have tried for a couple months to not add salt, looking at labels etc. The only way I can really control the intake is to make everything with fresh vegetables. I don't eat meat or dairy as is so no processed meats or foods anymore. But blandness is taking its toll on me. Help!!

@gingerw I sure hope you wont have to evacuate after all your rock hauling . Pasadena and those area where ordered to be on standby to evacuate here . Don't know about Fullerton. I can see and smell the bobcat fire had some ash also on benches outside . Worst year for fires Stay safe
I add ground India Turmeric to food when I want to liven up the flavor. I don't miss the salt at all. You can add some ground black pepper to it for even more kick.
I was limiting sodium prior to transplant and tomatoes really helped add acidity in place of salt. Fresh are best and homegrown really do the trick. Good luck and keep us posted.
Tomatoes are in season right now so I'll give it a try. Thanks!
hi, where are you texting from? I live in Texas.
I live in Wisconsin.
I stopped eating salt, dairy, sugar & gluten 4 years ago. I found that I need to spice heavily to satisfy my palate. I use many no-salt spice blends on almost everything. I eat hearty soups daily & make my own. I flavor the soups with spices & sometimes apple cider vinegar. I add Bragg’s nutritional yeast as a milder cheese substitute on eggs, pasta & salads. I also add a tiny amount of Bragg’s aminos as a soy sauce substitute & coconut oil when I cook fish. I eat many oils but if butter is required, I use plant based butter.
I will sparingly use some rinsed olives, capers or marinated artichoke hearts to add saltiness to some foods. I find that adding shelled pumpkin seeds or raw sliced almonds to soups, salads & cooked vegetables adds flavor and I also add canned tuna & sardines to salads & snacks. I eat a lot of spiced-up avocado’s & guacamole on sandwiches & snacks. My favorite breakfast is a toasted slice of gluten-free bread, topped with avocado or guacamole, a fried egg with nutritional yeast, a tomato slice, some fresh basil & balsamic vinegar...it’s full of flavor.
I usually buy whatever I can find for no-salt spice blends. My favorite is a no salt, no added sugar blend of sweet chili pepper that is more sweet then hot. However, once I ran out, I haven’t been able to find that or a similar product. I’ve also been unable to create an ideal sweet chili pepper spice blend recipe so if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
Try this if looking for a non spicy, but flavorful salt like feeling. I prefer spicy but think you guys will really like this spice. I think it is the tiny bit of citric acid and lemon peel (plus everything else) that makes it really work. It was the first non salt spice that really reminded me of salt feelings. Maybe they deserve the Nobel peace prize.

Here are the ingredients for the product:
spices (black pepper, basil, oregano, celery seed, dill weed, sage, bay leaves and turmeric), garlic, onion, carrots, citric acid, sesame seeds, red bell peppers, orange peel, parsley flakes, cornstarch and lemon peel
I have used that in the past but I now prefer just the turmeric and pepper for more flavor.
Thank you!
I am supposed to limit salt.
