Heat Intolerance: Symptom of Neuropathy?

Posted by kyc117 @kyc117, Sep 7, 2020

So I am waiting to get my diagnosis, but does anyone else feel odd after being out in the heat for a period of time? I love gardening this weekend was watering for about 20 minutes in the sun. I just felt weird afterwards, symptoms I can't explain. Sweat will just roll down my face, this never happened with me before.I love to take hot showers and one time I felt somewhat ill afterwards. I just feel I can't be out in the heat anymore.

Hello @kyc117, You will notice I changed your discussion title a little so that members that have noticed the same symptoms can share their experience with you. I've always been sensitive to heat and sweating even before my neuropathy but I do notice that the Winter time bothers me the most with the cold temperatures affecting my legs. While we wait for other members to share their experience with heat intolerance and neuropathy, I did find an interesting article that discusses the topic.

"For example, some sensory nerve damage can cause patients to lose their senses of pain and temperature changes. This numbness can place patients at risk of contracting sunburn without being able to feel it. Other autonomic nerve symptoms may include heat intolerance and increased sweating.May 6, 2020"

You posted earlier that you had an EMG test and are waiting for results. Can you provide an update when you have a diagnosis?

Thank you so much John, I will do that and thank you for the article.

I too was out in the sun for about 40 minutes but I didn't feel uncomfortable. Then without warning, I felt I was starting to faint and get nauseous. My husband rushed to my side, put me in the car and was on the way to the ER. I was breathing heavily and fast.. heatstroke he said. We were not home but 40 min. from home. Before we got home, I was breathing all right, but still sick and headachy and chest pain. Is that what you suffered, kyc117? I think we may be more sensitive to the heat than we were before neuropathy.

I do feel a bit nauseous and slightly dizzy, none of the breathing heavy though. I just have to lay down for a bit and then feel better. Thank you for responding.

@kyc117 Hi. Sorry to hear you are experiencing difficulties with heat as a result of your neuropathy, I too have issues with the heat. I discovered it while I was cooking. Don’t forget we don’t have our full detection mechanisms(nerve cells) so our bodies are getting mixed signals and try to compensate. I too become sweaty and nauseous. Anytime I feel that way, constant deep breaths(like lamaze) seems to help me shortly before I take a break. Your body is telling you it can’t tolerate the conditions. I get the same feeling any time my body gets heated i.e. when I do housework like vacuum, or go outside. I plan my chores daily to make sure I get enough rest in between and not to over do it. Being here in Florida, I stay outdoors briefly(10 minutes) in the summer time and when I do I stay away from the sun. The rest of the months are fine for me especially winter. Luckily my husband likes cold temperatures too so we only turn on the heat in the winter for nights below freezing which rarely happens. I have 3 house rabbits which run loose in my living room. They prefer cold temperatures as well. I will be happy to answer any more questions. Best wishes to you!

That must be hard to deal with in Florida! I’m from northwest Indiana, so it will be cooling off very soon. Thanks so much!

Thx John. I'm in bed so much that my computer, Gladys, is too heavy and takes up my entire bed tray. My MS Surface Tablet, Mildred, is what I use mostly. But, the tip I was mainly talking about is how to achieve a balance on the blog. I have come to recognize I can't be as active as I want and need to quit worrying that I'm neglecting anyone or their posts. It's impossible not to! Again, trying to be perfect. That gets me in so much trouble! I'm just compelled to fluff up everyone's world and make them feel validated, cared about and comforted. My limitations are so great. I have to RELINQUISH. Maybe this should be in the mental health section. Oh my. So yes, if you have any tips that way, b/c you are really present for everyone, please send them my way! Balance on a blog that is. Again, thanks so much John. Your input is so valuable. Forgive if you've already commented on this aspect of my request. I've heard I'm getting quite a few emails since beginning to type this. Talk later, Sunnyflower

Sunny, I have the same problem. There are way more lovable people here than there are hours in the day.

I am trying to organize my time here on Connect. Here is what I think I want to do:

1. Schedule a certain time (or set of different times) each day to do Connect. Try to stick to those times if possible.
2. Try to get to the point a little quicker. That is HARD.
3. Follow @bustrbrwn22 brown's extremely wise advice, "Assume Good Intent". And do not feel others are assuming anything different about me. If I don't get to everyone's posts, I don't. It's all in God's hands, not ours, ultimately.
4. Oh and here is a REALLY good one: don't respond to a post until I have read the responses other people have already written to that post. Good chance someone else has already given a great answer to that person and there is no need for me to.

OK, not going to let myself write another book. Maybe my list will help you, I sure hope it helps me!

Best to you Sunny, Hank

@sunnyflower -- Ah...that kind of tip is what you were asking about, my bad. One thing that I think is most important for every member - your own health is job #1. Before you can help others, you must take care of yourself. If you miss a post, well that happens. I miss a lot of posts. Not because I'm not interested or don't care about someone but it is sometimes overwhelming for all of us and we have to step back for awhile. Another problem is that if you are not tagged in a reply with your "@ membername", it's very easy to miss a reply or a post meant for you to see. That is one of the reasons I try to ensure that I always use the member name when replying to a post.

There are a couple of discussions that are a great resource for newer members and a refresher for those of us that have been on Connect a long time.

To all my friends on Connect:

It is just as healthy to take a step back, a step away, a breather from this wonderful place we call Connect, than it is to be immersed. I myself have needed to as others problems weigh heavily on me, in addition to my own.

Being involved with such an important group brings comfort, security and trust which people may not find elsewhere... I know this to be true for myself. However, I also have gotten better at realizing and being honest with myself when I physically and/or mentally cant keep up.

Connect will be here waiting for you...be kind to yourself.

My best,
Rachel

Hi @kyc117 You’re welcome. Glad you have the upcoming cooler months to look forward to. It is not hard for me at all. I have lived in the harsh cold climate of new england before moving to Florida. I wouldn’t want to deal with ice and snow in case of falls so the climate would prevent me from the outdoors. It gets hot and humid there too. In fact, I would be indoors more often than Florida. In Florida I go outdoors all the time but am more cautious during the hot summer months. I enjoy the rainy season. I do not keep the indoor temperatures low, mid to upper 70s. I do not need to because the ceiling fans are always on. I count on the moving air to keep cooler. I did previously enjoy hot showers but now use warm water instead. During the hot summer months I prefer cold or warm foods and drinks, rarely hot coffee. It is a newly required adaptation to be able to enjoy foods once again.....what can you do? It is definitely a learning experience. For me, I was lucky to have survived. Thanks for listening. Take care of yourself!
