Constant tinnitus: Are there any solutions?

My tinnitus started 12 years ago along with an inner ear tumour called an acoustic Vestibular swannomas neuroma That grew in size for several years then reduced in size but left me with tinnitus that sound like a jet engine plus occasional high pitched ringing like striking an anvil with a hammer. I am told there is no cure. It’s driving me bonkers I have to wear headphones at night to try and reduce it. Any ideas anyone?

There is no cure for tinnitus my husband was told by the Univ of Maryland....however, you can retrain the brain to ignore it. He wore white noise hearing aids, made just to fit his ears for about .2 years while awake. He still hears it on occasion, but is able to ignore it. the noise is a defense mechanism telling you that you should fight or flee...telling you something is amiss. After the retraining the the brain knows there is no danger....the noise will be tamped down. MY HUSBAND RARELY hears it now. He got his from rifle and gun fire in the Army.

I hear cicada sound too. Mostly on my right ear. I have learned to ignore it too. Doesn’t bother me when there’s noise around. I had a hearing test and it was normal. I sleep with the TV on and that helps.

I have the same problem, @amberj, only with Ibuprofen, as I don't take aspirin. it really does increase the volume, doesn't it?

Hello @2beagles, I've had tinnitus for over 12 years. I've never heard of a tinnitus program before. Could you describe a little about what they do in that program?

My husbands tinnitus made him crazy....up all night....went to doctors who only handled nerves in the ears...etc...nothing help..forget the c coffee and aspirin, it will not take care of your problem...if it does, only temporarily. Years ago, WM SCHAFFNER from starwars was on TV and said he got a divorce over his tinnitus.....he finally found the UNIV of Maryland who helped him... My husband immediately called the University and got an appointment. At the time there were 2 doctors that worked together on it. After lots of testing, he was made 2 large ...maybe different now....white noise looking hearing aids. He wore them daily for 2 years...during waking hours. They retrained his brain to know that the noise was not threatening. It was a miracle for him. No drops,, no docs, no clinics helped...only these devices. He no longer needs them and is able to have a normal life. That was 20 years ago.....it works. I would think Mayo Clinic has the program too. Good luck!

@2beagles Interesting . I,ve had tinnitus for over 30 yrs . ENT told me there wasn't anything that could be done about this . My son told me about a white machine . Maybe I'll have to try it .

It was not a white machine, it was specially made large hearing aids that gave white noise.......hard to believe ENT's don't know this yet....if you read my post my husband went to every doc he could....this fixed his problem......20 years of peace. for him....this is a very specialized area of medicine....I am a RN...I know.
