US spikes again with record 4928 deaths doubling in the last 24 hours.

I think part of the surge is the fact that "presumed" deaths are also now being included.
But I am sitting here wondering if the flattening of the infection curve is real, or related to the limited number of tests available. If the same number of tests are being run each day, and the same number of positives being reported, does it mean the infection rate is flattening? In my home state & my current shelter-in-place state, test criteria have not been eased - only first responders, medical workers and those in hospitals or care facilities are even allowed to be tested - not the general public.
We may never know the full extent of this pandemic.

4 ReactionsSadly I think we will find out how many untested folks in the general population are spreading the virus once we start opening up in those few places where confirmed cases are declining for 14 days straight. Unless we at least do more sample testing of general population, before opening up, I fear we will see more spikes and deaths.

Flatter but still rising. The US and world have not peaked yet, The US daily death toll of 1681 was up from yesterday’s 1593.

Not flattening yet. US daily deaths jumped from 1681 to 2711.

Starting to flatten again but not at peak. The worldwide deaths as percent of confirmed cases has reached 7%, and the US is at 5.6%. If the actual death rate is around 1%, then the confirmed cases are significantly underreported which I think highlights the need for a lot more testing to prevent community spread and new spikes when communities start opening up again.
