COVID-19 Coronavirus and Lung Health: What can you do?

Posted by Merry, Alumni Mentor @merpreb, Mar 1, 2020

Good morning- I have hesitated to post anything about this new and dangerous group of viruses because I am certainly not qualified to discuss any science. And certainly not about genetics and viruses. But I can discuss how we can lessen our fears, be as prepared as we can and very simply if we get it, what do we do?

First of all the COVID-19 is the name for many similar viruses. It's not just one. It is believed to have started by bat guana in Wuhan, China. Wuhan is the very large capital of Central China’s Hubei province. It is a commercial center divided by the Yangtze and Han rivers. This virus spread very quickly, perhaps like the flu. And because of travel. it is spreading throughout the world, and it is here in America. This is a group of very dangerous viruses has the potential to kill and has. Many of us with breathing problems must be very diligent to protect ourselves as much as we can.

You can help protect yourself by doing these things:

Keep your hands clean. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Cover your cough and sneezes to keep germs from spreading to others. Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces routinely. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Stay home when you are sick.

If you have these symptoms please see a doctor: Fever, Cough, Shortness of breath

I know that a lot of us have at least two of these symptoms already. So if your shortness of breath or your coughs become worse and you feel ill then it is time to seek medical help.

Here are several sites that have addressed the Coronavirus for more information.

If you know of anyone who is ill please stay away from them. Passing along the facts about this group of viruses is the best that you can do to help others avoid getting ill.

Hi Merry, This being shut in is for the birds.......lol...I hate to do this and I might chicken out yet but made an appointment to get my hair cut. Will be just me and my beautician inthe room but I can't stand my hair any longer, And then I got my appts for Mayo next month. I did have my video chat with my neurologist yesterday which went good . Unfortunately no answer has to why I keep getting the chills so bad even with getting my lexipro increased thinking it was anxiety. So don't know what to do about that. I got weeds growing in my flower bed and I don't have the energy to do anything about that so am looking for someone to do it for me......... My house is a mess. I need to get a baby blanket done and life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what the heck you will get. One byone things will get done. I keep telling myself, don't sweat the small stuff its not worth it and concerntrate on the blessings you do have. I hope you all start the day with a prayer in your heart, a smile on your face and Gods love and your families love right beside you..........PS I decided I'm not going to let COVID virus dictate my life, not going to do anything stupid either, but I'm in charge of my life.

@sakota9 I loved your post and know what you mean, especially not feeling up doing things, like pulling weeds. I love your humor in this time of stress and most of all I like your blessings we have, a smile on your face and GOD'S love with family by our side. AND I'M IN CHARGE OF MY LIFE! I'm having surgery at Mayo for my back on June 9th. Looking forward and anxious at the same time. I have been in a lot of pain so really can't wait, had to wait extra long time anyway. I know God will watch over me. Love to you.

@sakota9 I was delighted to hear from you. I go to Rochester also. I'm not scared of the anesthesia, but the first post-op day I'm fine, but the 2nd post-op day I start throwing up. It's only happened the last two surgeries I have had, but I guess all I have to do is tell the anesthesia and they give you something special so you don't get sick. Thanks for those smiles and prayers. Take care of yourself and my surgeries are June 9th and the 11th. It's a possible that after all the tests I have done next week they might only have to go into my back. From T-10 to pelvis is a long way, but I know they will get me straightened up and strong. You are a dear and I'm thinking of you with smiles and prayers. Jeanie

Hi Lilypad. I too have gotten sick from anesthesia but now I always tell them and they give me something but have had no problems in a long time. So make sure you tell the anesthesiaist this before surgery. I come to mayo on the 2lst of June. I have to have a test for the virus and that has to be done 48 hours before they can do any testing or whatever on me. Don't know if its the same for everyone or not. I will send you my phone number and if feel up to it, would come and meet you on the 2lst for a short Hello......... smiles and prayers Joan

@sakota- That's the spirit I like to hear Joan. I think that the virus has changed a lot of things and we'll see those in the future but for right now good, conservative common sense is the way to go and work within the confines fo those. I think that so far we know enough to be very cautious about being around others and keep distances and wear masks. The rest is up to us.

Dr. Poland has another wonderful new video out. It concerns spring cleaning, hand dryers, and toilets, and general common sense. I've been sorting through many many things in my house and trying to downsize the junk that has accumulated. I've been cleaning with 409, Lysol, and wiping off packages that arrive with Clorox wipes.
The Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Dr. Gregory Poland, a Mayo Clinic infectious diseases expert, discusses effective cleaning tactics to combat coronavirus.

We have also been vacuuming more and dusting more too. Mites are nasty little things that need to be gotten rid of. What tips or other ideas do you have?
