Can't be seen without a diagnosis?
I am trying to get an appointment for my brother in Jacksonville with the Neurology Department for his memory loss of undetermined cause.
I called to get the process started and was told that he could not be seen without a firm diagnosis. I explained that we have been given several tentative diagnoses and have had several tests done, but nothing firm was ever diagnosed. We are seeking a second opinion and do not understand why he cannot be seen. I assumed the Mayo Clinic sees many patients with unclear diagnoses...any words of advice to get by the appointment gatekeepers? Im currently going with the plan of calling seeing if I can get someone more helpful. Should we contact the Office of Patient Experience for help?

@brotherskeeper, that sounds frustrating. You and your brother are trying to get a diagnosis, but you can't be seen without a diagnosis. You may wish to have your brother's doctor make the referral. That might help as your doctor could share the suspected causes. @fmgeorge might have further tips to offer.
Brotherkeeper, You could call the Office of Patient Experience as well: https://www.mayoclinic.org/about-mayo-clinic/patient-experience
Is there one diagnosis that is being "favored" by the consults and tests your brother has had thus far?
We called back and got a more helpful appointment scheduler. We have an appt set for late March. Sometime it is all in who you talk to. Thank you.
What great news, @brotherskeeper. All the best with the appointment in March. I hope you'll return to post on Mayo Clinic Connect when you have more news.
