COVID-19 and MAC: What are you doing differently to protect yourself?

Posted by kathyhg @kathyhg, Feb 27, 2020

Is anyone doing anything differently to protect themselves now that we are facing the reality of covid-19?

@windwalker sorry but our borders are closed for quite some time, sad that you cant come here but really great for us who live here of course. As we are small we can stamp it out hopefully. There is a few clusters here tho ,1 was a st patricks day party in Matamata, which is a small place and 45 have contracted it from that party from a person who came from overseas, and another a wedding who have around 50 cases also from an overseas guest, obviously very catching! We have 1 death so far and all the ones in hospital are stable thank goodness. Our government have been wonderfull.Stay safe and stay away from your flatmate.Heather

@heathert Yes Heather, we here in Australia ("across the ditch:, as we say) have almost stopped virus cases too!
We haven't done it as well as New Zealand, but have done it pretty well -- with lots of testing, early border lockdowns -- even between states, and strict social distancing, many businesses and all public events shutdown since early to mid March.
Unfortunately, lots of jobs have been lost here of course, but health and safety really is a priority -- but there's no economic activity anyway if people are too scared by a dangerous and untreatable virus to go out and buy things!
@windwalker Me too, I wish you could come here to protect you better Terri, but Australian borders are closed also, just like in New Zealand.
I guess we all know that we're in this for the long haul -- until there is a vaccine or a good treatment.
I really wish it will all be over soon and we're all safe, but there are risks it could come back when we relax restrictions and open up again.....Look what's happened with Singapore -- it did so well in earlier, then eased up on restrictions, and is having trouble again now.
Let's hope and pray for a vaccine or a good treatment really soon. Everyone in the world needs that.
Love and prayers, Annie

@anniepie yes we are the same, next tuesday we are going to level 2 which is basically level 3 but able to go to drive throughs, lol I bet they will be very busy. Then we are looking at going to level 2 in 3 weeks time and we will be able to move around a bit more but have social distancing. We had 3 new covid cases today, 13, I think in hosp,1 in ICU. We have done very well in New Zealand, thanks to a great group of experts and our very caring Prime Minister.

@windwalker ...I think we are all in a little bit of a panic mode over this. The good thing is it makes us super cautious. My husband is still taking follow up apts on the sale of houses that are in the works. It is disconcerting...but understandable. I have nagged him almost to death on precautionary measures....so much so, that I am sick of nagging...hahaha. Never thought I would get there. I just did reschedule my yearly April apt with my pulmonologist for a date in June. Perhaps being optimistic but I hope not. Terri...I hope you are doing well and hope all of our brothers and sisters on this site get through this terrible plague with no infection. Good luck to us all and may we find good health, peace and hope. Yes...I am an old hippie... Speaking of old hippies...This is completely unrelated but I want to post this video just in case a little happiness is needed...you may not be from the same musical time and genre but thought I would take a shot. Best to all !! Love and Peace

Hi @mayofeb2020 – I was also born and raised in Hong Kong! I am glad to hear that you are doing ok – being able to vent to your friends and family really help in relieving some of the stress. What are you doing at home to help you pass the time? I try to do yoga and other simple exercises, and have been watching a lot of movies!

Are the people living in your area taking social distancing seriously? Or do you still see a lot of people out and about?

@heathert ok. I am so very envious!! New Zealand’s Prime Minister is amazing. (Women taking the lead). Nothing like smartness and caring to navigate through these times. Hugs. Kate

@anniepie I’m happy to hear things are getting better in Australia. My daughter is living in Sydney, (moved from Canberra April 1). When I speak to her it seems it never got nearly as bad as it did here in NY. We’ve been “inside” and closed down since around March 15, and are instructed to stay this way until at least May 15. We still have upwards of 350 people who die each day. At the time NY closed, she said everything in Canberra was still open and business as usual. Only the borders were closed. It was about a week after that the the gyms and shops closed in Canberra. She worked in a salon and her husband works in a gym. They moved to Sydney where they were supposed to both be starting new jobs first week of April, but, that didn’t happen because the shops and gyms closed in Sydney then. It makes me wonder if the people in NZ and Australia have better immunity to this virus or perhaps since the weather was warm, it didn’t spread as rapidly. I thought I also heard Sweden or Switzerland had very few to no cases at all. I wish the scientists would look into these phenomena. Maybe then we can find a way to stop it.
Prayers for all.
