Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Good grief..Dried Blood? I am assuming you can buy this and don’t have any vampires for friends.

@imallears, I laughing out loud!! Yes! Both bone and blood meal are sold and used for fertilizing bulbs. No vampires met personally (thank the skies!!) Mary, but I've learned the hard way that although squirrels leave my daffodils, day lilies, iris and hyacinth bulbs alone, they still dig like crazy around these bulbs/tubers after I've spread the powdered bone or blood meals.

@imallears Mary, Sounds like me! But, you may still have some ice in your veins????? It's really my body that rebels against temps...and humidity. But, in cold I can't breath well and my skin shrivels and dries like crazy and hair does exactly what I want! No curling or frizzing up.....but, same time, in humidity I use good lotion and lots of vaseline at night per dermatoloogist due to older/drier/neuropathy feet and legs and hands and arms and hair products truly help.
So, it's all about dealing, adjusting to life as it come. But, I love walking early a.m., just can't get up and out anymore due to this crazy body and joints, and sarcoid, etc.
Surrounded by all kinds of choices and delimas and decisions. And, do what I can, figure out a way to get it done! like walking the halls when I have Mayo appts....several days weekly at this point. What joy and a pleasant way to get in the walking.....with the wall of windows and the lovely property that used to be a heavily wooded ranch, still has so many trees and surrounded by wooded area and Mayo does such lovely groundskeeping/planting/maintaining, it's a treat. And, I have human beings around me, walking, talking, smiling I think ...blessings, elizabeth

Always look forward to your positive posts, @ess77! Despite managing health conditions that would freeze some of the rest of us in place, you always find the "silver linings" despite your challenging circumstances.

Thank you, Elizabeth, for prompting more of us to continue to observe and be thankful for the gratitudes we can ponder each day. Latching onto a sunbeam (whatever its form) even for a moment, can change our whole outlook for the day.

I only walked a half mile yesterday and didn’t do much better the day before.

@lionness sounds delicious. Is it a southern dish in the US?

Jump to this post

@artist01, Not @lioness and born and bred in TX, so don't know if that qualifies. I don't know if hush puppies are considered a southern dish but they are very tasty and always a "given" when ordering a catfish dinner here.

doesn’t seem to put out much vapor like it used to the nebulizer seems to
be working well I use 7% Saline and I believe I have the aerobika put
together correctly but does the aerobika wear out after once a day for 2
1/2 years sometimes two times a day any help from anybody out there? Judy

I know some of you are already in the discussion "Recipes, Food Tips, Healthy Eating & More" but for those of you who aren't and would like to continue the discussion around food and fare, please hop over to that discussion so we can keep supporting members who are here for the walking support!

Back to walking and talking.

Thanks, all! (Speaking of... I have yet to get mine in for the day.)

Yes,@amandajro, I caught your earlier diplomatic suggestion and plead guilty to straying onto foodie and garden talk. Will try to better behave....does jumping from one topic to another on a given forum qualify for a bit of reprieve if I plead maybe adult ADD??? Smiles.

I know this isn't at all a competition, @jakedduck1, but you still beat me with your half mile jaunt yesterday. Good for you! Maybe I'll strive for longer stroll today as the sun is out and a warmer day prediction.

@judyhodgern, Hi, Judy, I'm wondering if your question is something that could be better answered in the lung forum? I use a distilled water/oxygen unit to help my breathing at night but don't use a nebulizer and am unfamiliar with the aerobika you ask about. Not sure how to get you to that discussion but bet our Becky, @becsbuddy can. Hope you can get the answers your seeking!

@fiesty76 What are hush puppies? I only know them as shoes from the Seventies.

Come on down? Where do you live? If I came down any further I would be in the water. In fact I can walk to the water ((Anclote River) gateway to the Gulf of Mexico, from my house in 5 minutes. Why don’t I do that now....

Oh, quit boasting, @imallears! VBG A 5 min. walk to the water?? "Water, water everywhere and nary a drop to drink!" Pretty much says it all for my parched earth West TX locale. So come on...up? over? you'll still be welcome even if a short walk can have you dipping your toes in a water body larger than a tiny sprinkler caused puddle!
