Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Thanks so much! I know the motivation (and energy) must come from me . I have been using a walker because my legs are so wobbly but this morning I came down the long walkway in our condo unaided andI plan to do that again today. Yes, Iama fiber artist:sewing, embroidery, knitting. Plenty of raw material around, infact drowning ini it. RISD is offering online courses (my home state) and it’s tempting . The big laugh is that your dog was named Emily Carr! We live now in Bellingham and have been up to Vancouver to see the college. Susan
Hi Lori. So nice to meet you online, another artist named Lori/Laurie!
I'd love to see some of your work some time.
You asked how I chose my moniker @artist01. I've been an artist for most of my life, so that part was easy, and the "01" part came about because it was in the year 2001 that I got a new computer and began to use sites that required a moniker. The 01 was just a time signifier, you might say.
I have a long story about how I became an artist. As a kid, I was always drawing and painting. I remember in 4th grade there was a boy who only had French language (Canada!) and the teacher had me at the back of the classroom every day, drawing pictures on the blackboard and printing the meaning in English for him. Pretty archaic by today's standards, but I loved being involved with my drawing, for such a worthwhile cause. And that little boy was CUTE! lol
Once my 3 sons were grown and in university or tech school, I was enrolled at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary for 4 years, Banff Centre in Alberta for 1 year, taught painting at the Extension Department at Alberta College of Art, showed my work in galleries in 4 cities. Etc, etc. I shouldn't go on and on. I loved it all.
Can you share your artistic journey? No pressure. Lol
Hi @susu2. I use a walker now too. Pleeese, use your walker! You don't want to fall. I'm really glad you're motivated to walk. Good news!
I hope you untangle some of that yarn, etc., and find your creativity soon. X0

Let’s move ourselves over to the art for healing discussion group! Link is below. I think that all of our talk is so important in our health journeys. But, I don’t know about you, but I can’t walk and sew at the same time! We can share photos of what we’re working on or what we’ve done already. And maybe others will join us. Let’s go! Just walk yourself right over. Becky

Hi Becky. I walked right over to Art for Healing,as per your post, but none of your 4 invitees seemed to be there. Maybe next time.
Just got back from my short little walk. Baby steps. Beautiful sunny day today.
@artist01 Hi! I’ll be there tomorrow. Today had other plans for me. Looking forward to hearing about your art! Lori
Great! See you then.
@becsbuddy Mea culpa! !Lo Siento! Guilty of getting caught up in the crafty idea...So sorry
Ginger
@becsbuddy, Thx for the UTube, Jenny McClendon exercise direction. Just did one and time for a sit down! lol
I have to correct my words, it truly is “too cold” to walk outside in these frigid elements. Yes, I “tried” the last two days without getting very far before making a beeline for home. Yesterday, I found myself doing a half hour of floor exercises before learning what it’s like to be a hamster in my own home. After two miles, it was time to call it quits. That may be as good as it gets for this week. I will stay devoted to a daily workout “in home”. Enjoy the big game today, if for no other reason than to watch the commercials!
