Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@becsbuddy How about "Walking in Sunshine" - even when it isn't?! I call rain "liquid sun" or snow can be "frozen sunshine", just so it doesn't sound so bad!
Yeah, good to see you back.
Ginger
@gingerw, Another very clever woman! Would luv to see some "liquid sun" or "frozen sunshine" here!! Hugs!
Hi Becky - Welcome back! Since I'm walking in a lovely white world right now, yesterday I found myself humming "Walking in a Winter Wonderland." Other times I hum all of the old hiking songs from my Girl Scout years. I hope your lunch was fun - we can't wait for a little bit warmer temps to do an outdoor visit with our best friends.
@gingerw You're funny - but I often do walk in the rain when it's warm...
Sue
Frozen sunshine is a great description!
@sueinmn Wow, you can remember songs from Girl Scout days? What a memory! Yikes! Got just a 1 1/2 mile walk in today, but then the wind started. Not my favorite. Can’t remember any more walking songs but I so well remember our days in Germany when one big national hobby is walking/volksmarche. Every weekend different towns and villages would mark out a walking path, set up wurst (sausage) stands, and get a band to play traditional music. The walking paths wound thru the hearts of the old towns, thru the woods and the vineyards. We could walk 5-6 miles without blinking. And the kids would earn a medal at the end which I still have. Nice memories! Have you seen anything like a volksmarche where you live?
That sounds like SO much fun! Wow! What a great idea!
you're lucky, I haven't been able to walk the past few weeks, too much deep snow and ice to maneuver, it's scarey out there! More snow on the way today
I understand the no walking when icy/snow, glad you are careful. I feel fortunate so far in my part of Mn (even though chilly). I have been able to get out and walk everyday with the exception of 2 during January. We do have rain/icy/snow mixture coming as well, so an early morning walk today to open up my lungs and a short visit with a lovely neighbor along the way. Let’s keep our spirits high and our bodies warm!!
Hi Becky - Thanks for the memory. My brother lived in Germany for many years, and used to go walking on weekends. We joined a local volksmarche on vacation one year with our girls, and ended up at an old brewery on a mountaintop at a festival. On another trip we walked with our cousins in Slovenia - but they have a different name for it. I have never lived in a German community, so we haven't experienced it here, but our very Eastern European neighborhood had some kind of festival every weekend from Easter until Autumn, and we went to all of them, as well as celebrating our Dad's French Canadian heritage. Great memories.
Yesterday I walked to the lakeside dunes with my neighborhood and climbed up the hills in knee deep snow, then slid down on our butts. I'm a wee bit stiff today.
Sue
You and others have some great memories of Germany, a country along with Luxembourg, that I long to see someday. My heritage began there.
Your treck yesterday to the dunes and butt sliding sounds like a lot of fun!!! I heard yesterday that if we sit around too long, we leave “butt marks” - your adventure brings smiles and laughter. Thanks for sharing.
I made an upside down snowman after the last sticky snowfall, spray painted him blue and dressed him up so his feet were in the air. Then I FaceTimed my grandson and tried to convince him that he tried to get up the hill in my backyard and turned blue trying and ended up tumbling down. He looked at my Son (his Dad) who just shrugged his shoulders.
It felt so good to let the kid out in me LOL!
