Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Today I walked in the October winds - lovely weather, but Oh so bad for my lungs --- I walked in the door, washed my hands & nebbed. Looking at the leaves (and scuffing through the fallen ones) was fun. For those of you in the Upper Midwest, treasure this week of pleasant temps.

I do that..where I just go for a short walk by myself & instinctively will wash my hands the second I get in the house. But think it's a good habit to have these days. One thing I can control when it seems the world is in limbo.
Jake, I try to walk about 2 miles a day split in two walks. My foot doesn’t like even little hills so I go to a path nearby or walk in circles at the bottom of our driveway🤪 I don’t mind for seasons, but our winter consumes about 6 months so we don’t get to enjoy the others ver long. Hope you enjoyed your candy! I love it but only indulge in a little dark chocolate most of the time.
Walked a bit longer yesterday and was happy to see a few trees beginning to turn a little. Back in the 90s yesterday and predicted for the rest of the week. My thermostat is getting more exercise than I ! ac/heat..ac/heat...lol
@fiesty76 I I am walking but it is up and down the slope on our property, hauling rocks! We have about a hundred and fifty feet of 45-degree slope. I am moving rocks from there up to street level and filling in space between chain link fence and sidewalk. It's quite the workout; I have to downsize the poundage because of the slope. But I am still getting steps in, and putting stuff on my knee to keep it from screaming too loudly; don't want to wake the neighbors!
We have mostly evergreen trees in the area, but ever so often there is a seasonal tree. So, in amongst the dark green of the pine trees and Timber trees, you will see a brilliant flash of orange and yellow of a tree changing color. It is quite the awesome sight!
Ginger
Ginger, you are so determined to do this Rockin hard work, it is keeping you strong mentally and physically. Just keep pacing yourself!
@jude07 You will laugh to hear that the first words out of my mouth when we looked at this property where, "they're going to leave the rocks, right?"! There are a lot of rocks, almost everything from the size of a basketball down to finger sized have been moved by me. There are larger rocks on the slope for terracing and erosion control. And flanking the driveway entrance are huge boulders that took a forklift to bring in years ago. I like seeing the actual progression of the rocks being moved. My husband wanted the rocks along the driveway pulled so we can reset in red bricks. Then there is the rock feature made in the center of the front lawn that used all of the basketball-sized rocks around edge of the property. Many steps, and makes me feel good!
Ginger
@gingerw that is amazing! I am always worried about doing too much and have my sciatica come up and not have pain pills. You go girl!
