Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I just finished my morning walk - I thought it would be a short one due to the high humidity & rising temps, but there was a lovely breeze so I walked for over an hour - to and around a local lake, then a short tramp through the woods and back to the walking trail.

The high point was watching an eagle "playing" over the lake by chasing all the ducks - they flew into the shelter of the reeds and brush near shore. The eagle circled once again while cheering vocally for himself and flew back to his nest!

I also did my grounding exercise - "five things for my five senses." Today I'll tell you about what I heard - the eagle, a man mowing his lawn, the varying sounds of gravel, acorns & sticks under my feet, the distant hum of traffic and the birds calling to one another. And what I felt - the breeze on my skin, the warmth of the sun, the coolness of the shade, the ease of my body being able to speed up and slow down at will, and the coolness of water sliding down my throat.

What are you seeing, hearing, feeling or smelling on your walk today? (we'll save tasting for after your walk)

@sueinmn. What a wonderful walk you had! Delightful sights and sounds! I have been walking early in the morning too to beat the heat. Looks like we have to wait till next week to have a little relief. I did see about two dozen ducks on a soccer/badeball field, they must have flown in from a nearby pond. Very unusual to see thrm there in the middle of a city. They must be bored too staying in one place like we are! Happy walking everyone. Please keep our firefighters in your prayers . There are many fires in CA and we don't know ehen thry will be contained. Some firefighters as far as Australia are coming to land us a hand.

Aw, heck, @sueinmn, I wish I'd read your "5 things for 5 senses" Before my early morning walk. Mine was shorter and dismally drab in comparison to your visually poetic walk. However, I was aware of and grateful for the increased coolness and was heartened by the promise of fall. Today is my daughter's 50th b.d. and I spent the walk reflecting on our lives together and the continuing joy she brings to all in her circle. She alerted me yesterday that she and a friend would be taking an early 5 hour hike this morning so I called the g.s. to be sure he and bro had "wrapped" the gifts I'd ordered for her special day and they were at it ...yay!

@fiesty76. You have a 50 years old daughter? So you were a child bride? A very happy to her! It's nice she lives close to you. I don't see mine often enough. Actually she and her husband were looking for properties in Washington for retirement. Gig Harbor and Bainbridge Island? Does anyone know about these places? She did promise they will be looking for a place big enough for me too, although i may be long gone by then since she's only in her 40s!

Oh, Darn it all, @lioness, This? after I just spent an hour choosing which hat, sunglasses pr, and mask I'd don..figured no one could identify me on my "coming out naked day". Shoot, Linda, at least it was fun choosing the Best incognito gear!

Aw, c'mon and go for it! You may start a trend and still be incognito!

No way I could go incognito as crooked as I walk everyone would know me. I suppose the candy bar in my hand gives me away too.
I only walked around the block today. I was going to walk three times today but somehow it didn’t happen maybe tomorrow or next month.

I live on the hillside in Duluth and I get most of my exercise walking down to do errands and then lugging my loot back uphill, about 6 blocks down and then making like a pack mule back up. I can watch beautiful Lake Superior all the way down and sidewalk back up.

@ellens
Surly you have a driveway up the hill to your house? I don’t imagine you leave your car out to get snowed on. Do you just park at the bottom of the hill so you can get some exercise? Six blocks holy smokes.
