Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots.

Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.’

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect? And Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me? Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Hi everyone I'm back…. really I was embarrassed to post before because I couldn't do it with my heavy-duties ( two jobs & 5 kids ) it was impossible to get in
…but I'm trying to be realistic and try as much as I can maybe one day I could be fit & in shape again

@athoub You are doing great with two jobs and 5 kids. Do as much as you can, when you can. Sometimes you have to get up a half hour earlier, or go for walks on your breaks, spend time in the garden or yard, take kids to the park if one is available. No one said it is easy, any of us will tell you that! I, for one, am applauding you from the sidelines!

@athoub. You have nothing to apologize for. A job and 5 kids? That's alot to take care of especially this year. I hope they appreciate all that you do. Don't forget to find some "me" time for yourself too. A nice bath perhaps? and Do Not Disturb sign on the the door.

Please – give yourself a break. Are any of your children old enough to leave "in charge" for a short time while you sneak some Mom Time for a walk, bath or nap? Maybe in exchange for a special privilege that the others don't get – that's what my Mom used to do for me when raising 6 kids and working 2 jobs. By the way – instead of trying to take a nap in a house full of kids (with all the scary noises they make trying to be quiet) she would take her car to a nearby park, lay her head back and rest.
Remember, to be your best at work, you need to take care of yourself too. And the kids won't notice little things left undone at home.

I will tell you something I learned decades ago. I was a RN working full time; we had two little kids 16 months apart. My then about to be ex husband was finishing up his Master’s. Unbeknownst to me, he was about to abruptly walk out of our lives. Well, my BIG LESSON was you absolutely cannot take care of anyone or anything else well until you TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF FIRST! I am not yelling at you, but I am using caps because it was such a hard lesson to learn in a difficult way. But it is the absolute truth and the sooner you learn that, the better life will be for the entire household! Your children will not remember how clean your house was but they will remember that you loved them, snuggled them, read stories. I know many a time I literally dropped the vacuum on the floor when the kids wanted to go for a walk. That’s what they remember!

wisco50, how very sad that your husband walked out on you. Taking care of yourself surely makes sense. I am sure your children appreciated all the time you gave to them. You are a wise woman! @joybringer1

Thanks. It was very abrupt and upsetting. I was young (29) as were my kids. I was angry, hurt, sad. But I was most concerned about the kids. My son really struggled for years with depression and anger. My ex moved out and immediately in with his girlfriend. The kids would tell me that E was not nice to them, etc. My daughter (who has grown kids now) tells me she is glad I didn’t badmouth their dad to them and just let them figure things out themselves. (Guess it’s a good thing they weren’t mind readers! 😁) He remarried, divorced again but the positive was that woman was a good stepmom and we all have a good relationship and she and her daughter are in all our family celebrations. Good things came out of it and, naughty of me, but karma is also real. ‘Nuff said.

I went out to Costco and walked around the parking lot then went in and walked and walked around the parking lot again. Glad I took some Halloween candy with me.
on my way home I stopped at my brothers to pick up my 4 pound box of sees candy he was storing in his freezer. I can’t believe it but he and his roommate ate it. I don’t blame them, I probably would’ve done the same thing so he’s going tI replace it tomorrow.
Take care everybody,
Jake
