Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I agree, @lioness, 2 hours was too long and I'll not do that again. Happily, there were fewer shoppers on the 3rd trip than the earlier two. I look like a mummy, covered from head to foot and it is hot but I feel safer covering all that I can when in the store. I filled my gas tank for the first time yesterday. It had been 1/2 full since early March. Covered up for that too and even though not moving, I was sweating by the time the tank was full. Appreciate your good wishes!

Like you and others I think practicing heightened caution now is the safest way to stay as safe as possible especially as virus numbers are spiking nation wide.

@funcountess, Laughing while sending regrets on the "offer" to become your personal Walmart shopper! I'm still limp around the gills from the last marathon!!

Because TX is competing with FL, CA, AZ to remain in the top 5 "hotspots" for virus outbreaks and hospitalizations, I am thinking that
in person shopping will become much more hazardous for me as more local cases are reported.

I started with a 27 item list of otc meds, supplements, lotions, topical pain relievers,Q-tips, deod, vitamins, eye, nose, throat aids, band aids and Boost to name a few...smiles. Because I am picky and Brand name specific as well as only certain items are recommended by my docs, it was tedious and time consuming having to scan the many rows of products searched. Add to that dish, laundry, products along with cleaning products and food prep and storage products in another large area of the store and I had an unfilled but expensive cart worth of goods at check out. Having depended on grocery delivery exclusively since early March, I was running low on these.

Earlier trips focused on cat food which my grocery doesn't stock and things like paper products, light bulbs, batteries for electronics, Sharpie extra fine pens, cat litter, etc that are cheaper at Walmart.

Have to decline your offer for additional stress from your ins. co. as well...just learned yesterday that our medical ins is switching from Humana to First United...earlier was Aetna. Each switch also means a switch to a different pharmacy plan as well.

As for the offer of a bucket of ash, I had a purely harrowing experience. I'd added 3-4 day "dormant" fireplace ashes to my compost pile. Saw flames through my window while going to bed! Shocked beyond belief, I immediately called fire dept and grabbed garden hose. So happy to report that fire trucks were on the scene in about 10-15 minutes and except for damage to the compost bin and several fence pickets, the fire was out in short order. Very frightening experience so can't even begin to imagine what you and so many others experienced with the out-of-control fires in your area. From that time forward fireplace ashes remained in fireplace for a week or two and then were wetted thoroughly before putting in our metal dumpster.

Hmmm, vaccuuming is my very least favorite household chore. Even using a Dyson, my back aches. My daughter recently injured her back and her p. t. practitioner told her to pretend she was a T-Rex...tyrannosaurus with very short arms and thus to use very short back and forth motion while vacuuming. Wish I'd known to do this when I first injured my back years ago...it really Helps!!!!!

Yes, staying home is the best policy for those of us unusually vulnerable to the virus. I do feel better though knowing that now I have daily otc supplies recommended by my docs and other basics I count on for personal use and cleanliness.

Are you taking extra precautions now that the country is reporting an upsurge in virus cases?

Hello fiesty76,
Yes, taking great precautions with cov19. I feel better just staying home. I get all the latest news from medical personnel.
L.a. county had 11,000 new cases in 24 hours. L.a.county is south of me. They have it bad.
My goodness you have a stock pile of merchandise. I should sign you up to be a house mother in a sorority.
would you like to be nearUSC COLLEGE or MY FAVORITE UCLA.
If you choose to be a house mother you need lots of emergency makeup. Do you have that?
It’s getting late. I’m an early riser, always so much to get done in a day.
You had a scare with fireplace ash. Anytime you are interested in Wolsey Canyon pure ash let me know. Remember it’s pure.
Don’t let the opportunity pass you by.
I’ll even throw in a dust bunny, and some construction dust.
What an offer.
STAY HOME,
FUNCOUNTESS

@lioness & @sueinmn I walked 1/4th mile yesterday. Of course, part of that was walking in the house. My husband told me at the end I was not dong steps. I got tired out. I may not go out today. My daughter is picking me up for lunch and then I have a hair appt. Thank your comments. I feel cutting down on Tramadol in a week is not good, but that is what my surgeon wanted plus to walk more. I'm going to send a message to see if I'm walking far enough or too much. I'm hurting on my left side today. By my L-4 & 5 out to my buttocks. I think it's just muscle, but I hope I didn't pull a screw out yesterday. Thanks for your comments. They mean a lot to me.

@lilypaws - Once, when I was rehabbing from a knee injuury & surgery, I was beyond impatient to get better. A very wise therapist asked "How long since it was hurt?" I told him 6 months. He said, "Well, then, if you are all better in a year, I'll be happy - it can take a long time to heal a long-standing problem." I did therapy twice a day for 6 months, then once a day for 6 more & at the end of 1 year it was almost as good as before the injury.
So, patience is key! Hang in there

@lioness, Does myriad trips in and out of garage to bring in some of last purchased items and add them to my 'supply list inventory" count as a "walk on the wildside" today??? I purely hope so because I'm still dragging from last store trip and there is more to bring in today from garage???? Gulp, today is another "official" walking day and another decision...neighborhood or garage into house back and forth??? Fresh air is a good choice; items put away is another...oh, decisions, decisions!! Smiles

Heard that San Fran or was it LosAngeles? and San Diego had announced distance learning only for the fall. Someplace in Orange Co. was opening schools on site and not requiring masks. So many different decisions being made across the country.

Thanks but no thanks on the "house mom" idea. I was a student dorm advisor in another life and that was quite enough!! vbg Actually, I have some aging makeup I'll be glad to send your way...it certainly isn't being applied here! Glad to meet another early riser...I am out of sync with friends here who stay up late and sleep in...I'm ready for my midday nap as they are preparing breakfast.

With the abundance of pure ash, maybe you could start a soap making business??? You are way too generous by far! Think I'm about done with instore shopping but I've made my community economic contribution for the month ... just wanting to do my part.

Opted for the garage back and forth for walk today and Precious is grumpy because I've crowded some of her closet exploration space with new purchases. Any cat psychology tips ???

@lioness, Linda, is that the product name: Amish Arthritis Cream??? Is it found only at health food stores or nat'l chains like Walgreens or Walmarts, etc?
Glad you find it helps your sore muscles!
