Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@lioness. Do you live in LA county? In Orange county where I live, we finally get the number of cases by zip code. The highest number is where alot of young people live. The cases are going up and up. I am glad out Governor is shutting down bars and indoor dining again. Maybe it will help get the leveling we need. I feel bad for the restaurants and their employees, but if we all get sick, no one can eat out or even afford to. I hope people will refrain from having parties on July 4. Keep safe!

@fiesty76 I’ll never catch up with you, but I did two walks today—total 2miles! And, I’ve been feeling well all week! So exciting! Can I ask-have you ever used marijuana? Doctor said it might help with the fatigue. I’m willing to try anything.

@becsbuddy, I am so happy that you could manage not one but Two walks in one day...way to go woman!

No, I've not tried marijuana but on my fall visit to Boulder, my daughter took me to a very nice establishment that looked more like a high end gift shop and was next to a rehab center. They wouldn't let daughter go into "selection room" because she'd not had time to get her driver's license changed from IL to CO. We went in hopes of it being an aid for wt gain. Was given quite an interesting ed. on diff types and strengths and forms, etc. Did buy one small pkg that looked like vitamin gummies and when came time to fly home next day, hadn't tried one and had to figure out how to get it home without airport detection because medical mari..is illegal in TX except in a very few cases. I added it to a baggy with gummy vits and made it home but never got up the nerve to try it.

Best friend's daughter, also from CO, brought some for her mom for nausea and pain control while undergoing cancer treatment. Her oncologist would not prescribe but said some patients were using it. Friend reported that it did help her nausea and pain at that time.

We can purchase CBD products here legally, but I haven't tried any. A good friend with terrible back problems has used CBD products and says they give some relief. At the time I hadn't found nausea relief, I would have tried raw lizard salad if told it would help so I know the urgency to find aid for the fatigue.

Living alone, I was afraid with no one to restrain me, I might go running naked in the streets! lol If you try it, please let us know if it helps. You are really something to push through fatigue for walks...most of us lesser beings would just hole up and hope to molt! Did doc prescribe or suggest anything else too for help?

REPLY

@becsbuddy I did try CBD a couple from different companies but each time I got a severe headache almost instantly so I found when I'm fatigued in the morning I take one capsule of Korean Ginsing and feel my strength coming back . For my it only takes one . I only do take them when I need CBD

@funcountess, First the damage and recovery from the Wosley canyon fire and now dealing with the unpacking of your belongings. You are dealing with a double whammy for sure! I'm like you in not wanting workers in my house. Was very reluctant to even call for a new filter replacement install for my AC until one commode handle/apparatus broke. Marked the repair date on calendar because the plumber makes so many "house calls & repairs". Good to hear that your home rebuilding is nearing completion and that you have some help from your niece in sorting out your belongings. "This too shall pass" and I'm hoping for you it will be soon! Best.

L.B. Has a lot of good perks for seniors. Stay with it, it’s there, may as well use them.
Better then cooking. Is it a different restraunt every day?
Are you thinking of moving? Something about people leaving your senior building. Maybe they are too old or frail to live on their own?
Well, back to the garage cleaning.

I am in Rochester, Mn where I used to go to the Farmers Market on Saturday's and loved both the produce and the social time. Since the virus they have started doing delivery and/or you can pickup your order. Although I greatly miss the social time, I have used both the delivery and pick up and both have been great.

The humidity and temps have now increased so an early morning hour walk has worked the best! I have stopped tracking my miles just to appreciate nature and a few hellos here and there.
Happy 4th of July everyone! Stay safe and well!

@jude07, I love going to the Farmer's Market in Rochester. It used to be one of my Saturday treats going with my daughter. One of my favorite vendors was Omar's Kitchen Catering and their fresh baked goods - love their cranberry wild rice bread and rolls. It is a great place to get fresh fruit and vegetables.
