Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Hello JocelynK,
Sorry you have been thru the “ medical wringer”, what was done to patients years ago,was that was the info doctors were given at the time. Today there is more sophisticated thinking. The cancer you had was difficult to deal with. And yes some treatments are difficult on the heart, as are many medicines.
It is best to stay in during this pandemic. I hesitate to go anyplace, you just never know who can have the virus.
Do you have pets, or any crafts you enjoy working on.?
So many people on this connect do beautiful art work. If we all lived close together I think we would either take art classes, or be at each other’s homes being company to each other doing our art work.
Many of the women are widows also. I guess we are at that age, although my husband passed at a young age.
Stay well,.

Thank you for your response. I’ve been blessed to have the best doctors at the University of Minnesota thought my life.

My daughter lives her with me, however, will be moving in a few months. She has a great dog that has been wonderful company to me after my husband died. She gives lots of cuddles! I don’t have any current hobbies but want to get back into painting and restoring furniture. Also have to paint all the rooms in our house to update, if I’m still able.

Take care!

@fiesty76. Just got back from my daughter's. It was wonderful. I have a few gardening questions that I hope you can help. She said her zucchini are all male. Is there such a thing? Also something is eating all her dill seedlings. She has no idea what the culprit is. She had inverted a little plastic cup over them for a make shift hot house. The chards are untouched. We watch flying squirrels going from tree to tree while we ate dinner at their patio. Quite a sight.

Hi, @mayofeb2020, Yes, there are both male and female zucchini blooms: "Male blossoms are attached to a long stem. Look behind the flower for a swollen base. Flowers with the swollen base are female, as this is the ovary that later develops into the zucchini after germination. Only the male blossom has a stamen in the center of the flower.

I have trouble with snails and roly-poly bugs going after some of my veggies. Also some flying insects will nibble off the tops as they are first emerging. No problems with my Swiss Chard either but some veggies just seem to be more prone to attack.

My kitty, Precious, would love to be entertained by the sight of flying squirrels. She watches the brown squirrels scamper along branches and run up and down the large tree fronting our picture window but flying squirrels would be a great diversion for us both!

@mayofeb2020, Forgot to mention how happy I am that your visit with family was terrific! My daughter just sent pics of their trip to Vale area for a long Father's Day getaway. A vacation home with outdoor hot tub and multi-shots of mountain hike and woodland flowers. Next best thing to being with them is knowing our families are well and happy to be together, yes?

@fiesty 76. Yes, it was a very special treat staying with my daughter and her husband. It's nice to talk face to face with another human being. We all have been in seclusion since March other than my trip to the lab for blood work, so we feel safe. Her pantry is well stocked so there's no need to go anywhere. I canceled my dentist appointment for next week, don't feel ready yet. Maybe in August, that's a big maybe. She wants me to go again next month as LA Cañada Flintridge gets very very hot in summer.

@jocelynk

I am able to do both but haven’t since my husband died over two years ago.

Hi, jocelynk, I'm wondering if part of the reason you stopped walking after your husband passed away is that you are like I was after my beloved dog of 16 years died? It was incredibly difficult for me to resume walking again and I just stopped altogether for a long while. This Jan. I challenged myself to start again and named three days/week to do it as a new goal for the year. There are days when I really have to push myself out the door but even a short walk at the start of the day lifts my spirits. When Becky started this walking group, it was the perfect tonic to help keep me going. Are you up for a gentle dare? I walk on Tues/Thurs and Sat and so far, so good although there were some days when the walk had to be inside because of inclement weather. Wanna' join me next Tues through our cyber link? We can compare notes afterwards????

Hey @jocelynk Im Becky and we’d love to have you join us! @fiesty76 and @lioness are the Olympic walkers of the group! But, you needn’t try to keep up with them. Just get out and walk or exercise at home and make a habit of it!

Yesterday during my morning walk, as I was enjoying the peaceful morning air and the silence of the morning. As I was moving suddenly I was jarred back to reality by a croak of a frog as he jumped into the pond. After my heart recovered and resumed a normal beat, I had a good laugh because I realized that we both were similary affected by each other's intrusion.

@lioness, You are an inspirational leader! Thankyou and please be safe in your bldg.
@jocelynk , You certainly have a robust task ahead of you with the painting. Join us in a virtual walk when you can spare a minute. Will you be doing the painting? Have you given any thought to adopting a furry buddy of your own?
@1065408, I was thinking of you while walking one day. I was out early and the humidity was becoming increasingly unbearable. I have been careful to remember to use my inhaler during this central Kentucky heat. We are almost neighbors! I am just SW of you in Danville. Hope to see you along this virtual walk sometime when the weather is in your favor.

@rosemarya glad you had a good walk this morning. Hoping I too can get back to walking. Starting on nighttime oxygen for shortness of breath. Sure hope that improves daytime breathing. Stay well.
