Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I haven’t noticed any benefits from walking yet but I don’t walk as far or as often as you do. I’m just waiting for the gym to open back up so I can go into the sauna. Occasionally when I get inspired I’ll go in and walk and ride a bike and maybe do a couple of other things. I don’t remember that song in the sound of music.
I thought it was in carousel?
And there is no such thing as having too much chocolate it’s just not possible.

A few cows on your walk would have been a delight, especially if they were Brown Swiss with their beautiful big eyes. Yes, I grew up on a farm.

Definitely, there are both physical and mental positive benefits. Without walking, I would be a mess! Thank you and thank you all!

I don't get to see any nice pics like that. Just live outside the city. Walk, walk, all the time using my walker. With the coronovirus we must sit in the back of the bus. I don't like that so I walk to the store and back. Almost a mile. It does nothing to my shape or changes my weight.Only the gym can do that. Walking is free and takes no motivation.. Those are the benefits of it I see. Going to go for now so I can get some walking in. I cannot stand cabin fever! It surely benefits by that way or I'd have a boiling temperature without it.

Oh my gracious what could I have ever done to deserve that. That conglomeration of slop looks worse than anything I’ve ever cooked. Sure glad I haven’t eaten yet, my appetite for lunch and even candy is gone.
Have things gotten so bad that you have resorted to eating garbage? I know you should eat whatever you’re served If asked to dinner but I believe even the top etiquette experts would agree with me on this one. If you served me that it would be in the garbage quicker than the speed of light . Thankfully I can’t even identify what some of it is and I hope you never tell me.
I’ll never understand how you could turn down my generous offers of some of the finest gourmet foods and wines in the world and yet you eat stuff like this.
You always have such good cooking suggestions And yet you come up with stuff like this, sometimes Mary you just boggle my mind, what’s left of it.
Anyway thank you for your suggestions.

Oh Leonard...that is grilled octopus that tastes just like the best steak. It's on a bed of grilled Romaine and Grilled Tomato. I asked for it and everyone gobbled it up so fast. What a treat you are missing. I have to run to Spain to get the best octopus and not everyone gets theirs from Spain. If I blindfolded you and fed you a taste you would be amazed....and I ain't joking. It's good enough to make you run around the block....had to get walking in on this thread.
We have been grilling heads of Romaine for years.

BTW, I walk 2.5 miles every day early in the am before the temps soar....this time of year in Fl. Never saw so many runners and walkers in my life before the pandemic.

Well, maybe no walk for me today - 2.5" of rain since yesterday afternoon and still falling - and the temp as well. This is my first day off in over 2 weeks, so I don't feel too bad. Used my walking time to put a big pot of ham, tomato and lentil soup on to cook - smells really good in here.
But I'm feeling very accomplished - finished a "big boy" quilt top of my own design for my 4 yo grandson's new bed. All from my stash - no I need to track down a back and the batting. I will post a pic when it's ready.

@sueinmn Oh how lovely. The quilt I mean. My Mum in England used to make quilts with her scraps. They were so pretty. You must be very industrious making all that food. I used to make strawberry jam when I picked them myself.
Now my walking uses up most of my energy. I tried to walk earlier this morning but it was hotter anyway. There were a few people out there but not many. Isn't it funny though how you can have a really long gap with nobody and then suddenly there are 2 cars and someone walking each side of the road. For a minute there I wasn't sure where to go. I diverted to the trees. Our roads up here are quite narrow and one way. .

Oh that is stunning scenery. Wish I could be there walking with you. I often see deer on my walk but can't
get my phone out fast enough to take a picture. Some wild turkeys around and once I saw a bobcat right in my subdivision. I thought someone had a big dog.

@imallears I would go for that. It's my sort of food. I had octopus the first time when I was in Spain around 1960. That and the Paella were delicious. Woops, this isn't walking again. But on thinking more about that, if we talked about nothing but walking there wouldn't be much camaraderie. We just need a sensible balance. Everyone on this walking site has got to know each other socially from a distance and I think that's good.

@becsbuddy That is a beautiful picture. Very different from hawaii and just as lovely. I should learn how to post photos on here.
@jakedduck1 In answer to your response about feeling any benefits from the walking and also to Becky. I am definitely feeling improvements. I mostly feel the change downward when I don't exercise and then when I do exercise I feel what I look at as normal. My body feels more in alignment from the stretches too. So I would say Leonard that you might be feeling a lot worse if you did none of your exercise even if it isn't that much. Any movement is better than no movement. And what do they say, 'Use it or lose it'? Of course that can refer to a lot of things!
