Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@pollyanne, My best friend, who has lymphodema in her arm from cancer surgery has been using CBD ointment and says that is providing pain relief. Her daughter brought her some from out-of-state. They asked her oncologist about its use and the doc would not give my friend prescription for medical mari...although I think, but am not positive, a med. script is legal in our state.

@jude07 I did about a mile and a half at a brisk pace. That's pretty much my limit, it's hard on my knees. I plan to do some more exercise tonight. I am doing core exercises and exercises for balance. Since I have osteoporosis now, balance is more important than ever.

@mayofeb2020 When I went out it was 58° here, I just needed a vest.

@migizii It is a fairly decent workout and not too long. I can exercise for an hour in the gym but I get tired of it when I am watching videos. There are others by a Jenny McClendon that are good too, and fit my requirements of not being too long. If you google her name a number of them will come up. I think they are really for the 50+ crowd.
I tried doing some that my health club has put out on their website but most of them required getting up and down from the floor fairly quickly and I can't do that. It was disheartening for me, I guess I had delusions of being in better shape than I am but the knees conspired against me again.

@pollyanne I hate walking when it's very chilly, I find it more difficult to breathe, I always have.
I did try CBD cream on my knees and on my hips but it didn't help me at all. I think it's one of those things that helps some people but not others.

@contentandwell, Thank you for the Jenny McClendon ref. I'm not a fan of exercising with video but I tried her Beginner's video and could do most of it. I've bookmarked the site.

I just could not “cold up” these past two days to walk outside, so I exercised to YouTube videos......I didn’t want to walk around the house like a hamster, so I did these instead. YouTube is a wealth of ideas and I’m fairly limited in my range of capabilities, so it’s worth checking out if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

@darlingtondoll Two hours walking in the pool? Is it an indoor or outdoor pool? Do you ever have a competition while you’re there? Too many questions, but have a great time when you can get back in! Becky

I used to go to the outdoor pool and there are fifteen or more people pool walking. It’s a very friendly group. I haven’t been able to go for almost a year because of the open ulcer on my tailbone.

@fiesty76 I came across this last night and I think it's pretty good. I love that it's only 5 minutes, so it's easy to do daily, even more than once a day! Balance is so important as we age.

Lavender and lemon as you know lavender is great for relaxing and lemon oil just like lemon juice calms your mind and healing effects too add with sandalwood or almond oils or coconut( fractionated is less oily ) it holds the effectiveness of essential oils longer taking a hot bath and cold shower before then quickly warn up with hot towels and use your chosen essential oils, place a slice of lemon if you have one near you bedside , and enjoy good restful nights sleep . I like to turn off website hour before it helps you unwind easier . Read the psalms 27 is very precious . Sometimes use eucalyptus oil with tea tree oil or lavender and Orange oil use no more than three to diffuse and give your room refreshing air , Hope this helps Kind regards swift HUG from England keep smiling and stay safe 🙂

@fiesty76... Making up my grocery list now even though I had a delivery yesterday. I was fortunate my shopper really worked hard to get my order in. My son added his Toll house chocolate chip cookie dough in my order and was dismayed that it was substituted. My daughter and I chewed him out for being ungrateful. I didn't get everything I ordered but the shopper texted me pictures of empty shelves. I gave him a big tip for his work even though a tip was included in the order (which my son paid for 😊) as it was so little compared to the whole purchase. I read that dairies are pouring milk down the drain and farmers are plowing down the vegetables as demands from restaurants and schools dwindled. I feel so helpless. Ugh.
