Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Ok, Wind and cold is not a good combo Jude, guess I will continue to what is possible while at Mayo. Haven't heard any so guess my treatment will continue. Just wonder if I will ever get home.

I just saw this on my Facebook feed and thought some of you might be interested. I'm planning to at least do some of the exercises...

This class will involve low-impact moves to boost your heart rate and bodyweight exercises to build strength. All levels are welcome! Remember to go at your own pace and use a chair if needed (modifications will be offered).

I’m so glad you all are still walking even with the rain and snow! Course, walking along a beach is perfect. I’m waiting for it to warm up a little. 21 degrees is just too cold for me.
We have about 20 people who are missing and that’s just too many to list. Hope they’re out there somewhere. We’d love to hear from you!
Keep walking, exercising, or whatever you do to stay healthy! The public health experts have said walking and getting outside is great as long as you maintain social distancing. Let’s go!

Hello Everyone. Happy to say I took short walks 4 days this week, and yesterday, while housebound due to Covid19 as we all are, discovered an in-house channel that provides 30 minutes of chair exercise programs daily. Perfect for me! The exercise program does get you moving and you feel more engaged and energetic. May finally get to that spot in the bedroom I’ve been wanted to straighten out! Stay safe and healthy.

@lioness, yes good idea. I am not sure if I can do that here. I am going to enquire. Living on an island we don't have all the options that the mainland has. It is sunny this morning which is good as we have had rain this week. I will walk later on as I always need time to really come too in the morning especially now I am on the drug Lyrica. Does anyone else have any experience with taking Lyrica?

Hi @1065408, congratulations doing so well. That sounds like a good programme. I work out a lot in the bedroom and I can have my own TV channel on in there!

@johnbishop I did the exercises yesterday at 11:30, do you know if these are the same? They were pretty good but not quite as challenging as I would like. That sounds as I’m in way better shape than I am, but I had been going to the gym three times a week before being stuck in. Anything is better than nothing though. I’ve been doing some exercises that were given to me by my physical therapist that include planks and bridges because those are good for your core and my core needs help. I’m also doing balance exercises, they are recommended if you have osteoporosis.
I wish my health club was part of the silver sneakers network so I could get a discount.

Aloha @contentandwell thanks for reminding me about planks. I haven't done those lately but I am doing yoga balancing exercises. As far as the gym goes I believe they are all closed down right now but can you find another one with the silver fit when we are over all this. We don't have many gyms near us on Maui as we aren't near the central town but a new one just opened near us (haha just closed) but they have some sort of silver fit program where they pay you back if you use them so many times in a year. I know that some gyms stopped covering because people weren't using the gym and so they didn't get paid. We plan on joining the new gym when we are over all this virus problem.

@pollyanne. I like my health club because it’s the only one that has a pool other than a Y. The Y has classes but you have to sign up for them and pay for the session. At my club that’s all included in the membership fee, except for a few things that have a very low teacher-member ratio.
There is no extra fee for yoga and regular Pilates so I’ve tried them recently. They are both more difficult than I expected and they work your core so much that if I have eaten anything within the last couple of hours I get very sick feeling. I do plan to try again when the club reopens though and I think I will pay the extra to do Pilates Reformer. I did that before and it was easier for me than regular Pilates.
When we were in Maui our condo was on a beach that I think was called sugar beach. It was a great beach for walking and there were never many people there.
