7% Saline Solution
Got a supply of 7% vials and got a real jolt in my throat when I began inhaling it. However I quickly adapted to it and was able to finish the vial. Within a few minutes I was coughing and bringing stuff up - a first. I never had a timely response to 0.9. Bottom line: I guess the 7% solution is...well the real solution. Not to be confused with the Sherlock and Sigmund thing. Forgive my corny effort at mirth. Don

I joined the “7% club” 5 days ago. Here’s my experience: I was able to convince my GP to write a script because I gave her copies of the first page of two articles that Terri, Sue, and others have posted here, which she said she really appreciated: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4850692/pdf/13104_2016_Article_2054.pdf and https://www.resmedjournal.com/action/showPdf?pii=S0954-6111%2811%2900254-X
I’m using a Pari Vios Green LC Sprint nebulizer system. It’s been taking about 13-15 min to nebulize 4 ml of 7% saline. (I take about 6 slow in-and-out breaths per minute). I do cough sometimes during the process. The nebulizing has really helped me bring up mucus from my lungs. Until now, I’ve had mostly dry coughs (although I've gotten a bit more mucus in the mornings since I recently started taking 600 mg NAC). One thing I noticed is that when I nebulized sitting at a desk in a more confined space, the compressor pulled some of the nebulized fluid from the air and caused condensation in the tube from the compressor to the nebulizer. So, I suggest to new users to not be in a confined space when nebulizing.
@suenfl Hi Sue. How is the vest and saline going for you? How does that vest feel?
I haven't received it yet. Hopeful! I am staying isolated. Will let you know. Thanks for asking
@lorifilipek Hi Lori! How are you doing there in Arizona? Are you finding things to do besides work?
Hi Terri! Everything's fine so far. Yesterday morning watched a bobcat try to sneak up on some quail in our backyard. Our 30-yr-old clothes dryer broke a week ago, so we had a new one installed on Saturday. I wore all kinds of protective gear. The installer has 5 kids, including a newborn, and was also quite concerned, so he probably appreciated my gear. I wiped it down and didn't touch it again until today. We're testing it out as I write, and I sure hope it works. Tomorrow, we're going to Whole Foods and then Fry's early in the morning to stock up on perishables. (I hope that's the last time for a while...) I was wondering--does anyone know if the Pari compressor is helpful as a ventilator?
I just read a great youtube video by National Jewish Health from Sept 2019. Titled "Overview of Nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) and Bronchiectasis" MAC of course is part of NTM. It lasts about 30 minutes, and on Time Stamp 15:59 there is a chart including all Modes of Airway Clearance which included 3% and 7% Hypertonic Saline. Here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYVngD7SbGM&feature=youtu.be
The presenter is Dr McShane who is now at UT Tyler. I sent her a sputum sample yesterday. A great presentation by a fantastic physician.
Hi, I have been reading through the nebulizer posts and have learned quite a bit I did not know. I did not get any specific directions from my doctor for using the nebulizer. I read the directions from the manual. I have now been using it for a little over a month. It does help me cough up mucus. I use it two times daily. I have a blue Pari vios pro.
I am wondering what people's technique is for nebulizing. I have to start and stop over a period of 45-60 minutes so that I can cough and relieve the irritation from the salt. I am using 7% saline and am wondering if I can get away with using 3%. I have not been diagnosed with MAC. I have been diagnosed with bronchiectasis and most recently an in my right lung infection that did not resolve to antibiotics.
I think that the nebulizer has helped me feel better and I am not coughing as much between nebulizer treatments.
@anunez Hi, I also had to just read the nebulizer manual. I cough sometimes during nebulizing, but not very much, so I don't stop nebulizing. According to the video poodledoc posted on April 7, both 3% and 7% seem to help bronchiectasis. However, many of us believe that the 7% will help keep the MAC at bay. Good luck!
