SIBO and Rapid Gastric Emptying or Dumping Syndrome

Posted by dheavner @dheavner, Dec 24, 2019

Does anyone els have these 2 diagnoses together?
I read more about gastropheris accompanied with SIBO.
I am 9 months into this sickness triggered by food /water poisoning in Mexico. I have done 4 rounds of antibiotics and am finally seeing a GI motility specialist, and also looking at Mayo if she cannot help me.
Anyone with similar diagnoses with advice on what has helped them. I have lost 70 pounds, constant nausea even with Zofran, dizziness and sugar drops after eating, constipation and just feel terrible.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Dumping and delayed (slow) gastric emptying are complete opposite. Dumping is when your food leaves your stomach too quickly causing diarrhea and delayed gastric emptying is your food sits in your stomach too long and usually causes constipation. H.pylori and c.dif can cause the same symptoms as dumping. I've had both those and usually get treated with antibiotics. I had h.pylori that the antibiotics didn't work on. I ended up doing a natural supplement regimen that took about 90 days to get rid of it.

@claytamos You can actually have both. The food can sit in the stomach.. actually long enough to make a bezoar and then you will suddenly start dumping. The dumping usually contains both solid and liquid. Every day before dumping you may actually have normal bowel habits.. no constipation. You wonder where did all this crap come from??? For some reason the stomach will digest some foods and not others. I had to stop eating raw foods and eat soft cooked food to make them more digestible to help my situation. I also watch my sugar and greasy food intake. I started taking a probiotic which helped tremendously with the liquid bowel movements and dumping syndrome. I tried several, but Align works best for me. Now I have a swallowing problem and my food stacks in my esophagus. I am coping 😀

I think @dheavner 's problem is probably a bacteria one and needs testing as others have said. My brother had c-diff and it is hard to get rid of.. hopefully that is not dheavner's problem.

Hi @dheavner, I'd like to bring @konniehoover @fourof5zs @faithann64 @azcyclist2018 @sickvick @downtowntiger and @claytamos into this discussion as they have had experience with gastric dumping.

You mention that you had fundoplication surgery in 2013, but that they gastric emptying/dumping only started recently, perhaps triggered by food poisoning 10 months ago. I can't imagine losing 70 pounds. What treatments have you tried? Has anything helped?

I am using Ascarbose with meals to prevent the blood sugar drops when dumping starts quickly after eating I lay flat.. I eat low fodmap, gluten free, no added sugar and had to cut out fruits
I also have SIBO with Constipation
The other strange thing is that I don’t have diarrhea with the dumping
The question is I the SIBO causing dumping, or dumping causing SIBO
I am seeing a local motility expert soon and scheduled with the Mayo Motility Clinic in March

How did your appointment go? I was diagnosed with dumping syndrome at Mayo in Rochester MN years ago. I am now being told that they think I also have SIBO. As a side note I also have chronic pancreatitis and Hypothyroidism that are out of control at this time. Thanks

Has anyone ever suffered with this condition? My stomach empties too fast. I’ve been diagnosed recently with it. I’ve suffered awhile with chronic nausea and dry heaves. It’s horrible to go from one test to another. I also suffer with anxiety and depression. Now adding this to my overwhelming worries and meds. So many things and rules. Also not sure if I have a UTI, was tested. Most was negative and one was a little off. They feel it could be a start to an infection. Put on amoxicillin just in case. Which can add to nausea. Feeling more upset. Thank you.

Hi Flow, I moved your question about Dumping Syndrome to this existing discussion:

I did this so you can connect with @dheavner @konniehoover @fourof5zs @faithann64 @azcyclist2018 @sickvick @downtowntiger and @claytamos and others.
