Welcome to the Autism group on Mayo Clinic Connect.
Living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may have many aspects in common with neurotypicals, but also some uniquenesses. Whether you are someone diagnosed with ASD, or are living with or caring for someone with ASD, let’s connect.
I’m Lisa, and I am the moderator of this group. I look forward to hearing about the lens through which you look at life, your experiences, and what comes easily to you and what presents difficulties. Perhaps you or your loved one has been misunderstood or even mistreated by others, or maybe you have heightened senses that bring you much joy. Whatever your story, I encourage you to share it openly and frankly, and also provide compassion and a place of safety for others touched by autism.
I’d love to welcome you and introduce you to other members. Feel free to browse the topics or start a new one.

Neurotribes. The "history" of Autism.
@lisalucier, there is so much to learn.
One phrase has caught my eye so far.
Take a quiet, pleasantly outfitted room, and bring your Auite inside.
Shut the door behind you. All the comorbid conditions to Autism fall away in a calm quiet intellectually rich environment.
The noise the smells the sights the textures the tastes the pace the intensity the spiralling down to a meltdown .....of the out side world.
Therein lie the questions snd therein lie the answers.
He goes on to describe ancient characters who exhibited many of the same behaviors as those we refer to as Autistic.
It cannot be made plainer than that.
We are not new. We have been here all along.

Somewhere along the line a few brilliant investigators (names vary but I will supply them) had decided they were not satisfied with the staus quo or the "party line" where it concerns Autism or ASD.
Not satisfied with labelling children as well as adults as "disabled " simply because they appeared to have some behavioral issues inbolving the senses. "Sensory" issues.
Not satisfied at all as a matter of fact because many of these same children myself included tested at genius level in widely varying areas.
Disabled. Or genius. Could it be both? Even in the same person? Yes. And yes.
Some brilliant neuroscientists decided to investigate this issue. What they concluded was that the "Neurotypical " brain and the "Neurodivergent " brain are basically two different operating systems. Think machines.
The majority of Earth's inhabitants fall into the typical category. Some of us ( yay whoo hoo over here !) find ourselves in the divergent category.
As Temple Grandin says "Not less than but different. "
As my first boyfriend said after I'd had dinner with his family....after I had asked him what they thought about me...
Well they liked you.
But they rhink you're different.
Ok. I should have had a clue right then and there.

3 ReactionsSome savvy soul somewhere noticed that we Aspie types seem to get along pretty well with our own.
We dont lack a sense of humor nor empathy nor social behaviors around others who also sport Spectrummy tendencies or sensory issues.
So then this savvy sensitive soul surmised that in the absence of this loud and annoying cacophany of modern day society the sensitive savvy souls did just fine with their own "tribe."
Hence the term "neurotribes.""
My tribe. My people. If you get lucky and you are not born into a neurotrible you can still be adopted into one.
If you love us and respect us and hold space for us there is a very good chance we will take you in.
We are very loyal.

4 Reactionsautism is part of a larger group of Neurodiverse conditions and we all have linkage through changes in biochemistry, hormonal impacts, stressors, comorbidities and impact from the brain being made during the birth. We have links to OCD ADHD, CLINICAL DEPRESSION SCHITSOPHRENIA. We are all linked by changes in electrical circuitry, hormonal and biochem and nerve synapses and the changes in neurons sending signals and excitability and in us extreme temperatures.

2 Reactions@sirgalahad Stuman is some better with the steroids. Not much. I had to cut his steak at lunch at the Texas Roadhouse. It was delicious.
We have the next week to look forward to more test results and possibly a Rheumatologist.
As you can tell Sir I am reading Neurotribes. It is a fascinating look into the "history" of neurodivergence.
Today was my birthday hence the traditional trip to our local steakhouse. Keto birthdays do not involve rolls or baked potatoes. But it was still fun
Looking forward to our time here this new year.
