Welcome to the Autism group on Mayo Clinic Connect.
Living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may have many aspects in common with neurotypicals, but also some uniquenesses. Whether you are someone diagnosed with ASD, or are living with or caring for someone with ASD, let’s connect.
I’m Lisa, and I am the moderator of this group. I look forward to hearing about the lens through which you look at life, your experiences, and what comes easily to you and what presents difficulties. Perhaps you or your loved one has been misunderstood or even mistreated by others, or maybe you have heightened senses that bring you much joy. Whatever your story, I encourage you to share it openly and frankly, and also provide compassion and a place of safety for others touched by autism.
I’d love to welcome you and introduce you to other members. Feel free to browse the topics or start a new one.

Today I met the mother of a young teenager who has Aspergers.
It never ceases to amaze me.
No matter where I go, they find me.
Or maybe I find them.
We shared the commonalities and enjoyed our little secret society.
She is,very proud of her child. And she should be.
I think she enjoyed our brief time together.
I know I did.
It feels so good to meet others who understand.
Kind of like being here.

@sirgalahad, in answer to your question "Are you going to take up shooting like Ginger?" my question to you is "Why not?"
Here in the South a Southern Belle knows how to track a deer, catch a fish, and bake a caramel cake probably before her sixth birthday.
In the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains girls are raised to be independent, strong, and capable. That usually means that girls who grew up in the fifties and sixties know their way around a rifle.
I however, remember very little of the times I practiced shooting with my father. So before I purchase a weapon anytime soon, there must be lessons on the firing range.
No need to fear. I will not be one of those trigger happy gals you see on "Snapped."

@mamacita Don't forget knowing your way around a toolbox, and how to fix a car! I gloriously failed home economics in junior high school. But I had full run of the Industrial Arts classroom, because I knew how to handle every piece of equipment in there and proved it.

We girls can do anything we put our minds to. Whether we live in Pennsylvania, Washington state, or Alabama, we can do it!
Just like Rosie the Riveter, Shirley Temple, and Betsy Ross, we do what we have to.
I have a printed out piece of paper attached to my bathroom mirror.
It reads:
"You can do anthing."
Yes. You can.

Sixty-eight feels really good on me.
Now if I could just snap my fingers and lose this last fifty pounds.
It's so hard using portion control and eating all the right things. Everyone has that cross to bear, so I know I shouldn't complain.
Husband just gave me a bite of his burger. Oh man. My one consolation is this:
There won't be any such thing as calories in the Great Beyond.

@gingerw, @sirgalahad , wouldnt it be lovely if one of us ( our friends on the Spectrum) actually became a member of the House, or Senate?
We are everywhere and we are doing some really great things in our little corner of the world
Maybe we should be researching this idea. As we advocate we can make small dents in the crazy world around us.
