My seizures started after electric shock.

Posted by bern1958 @bern1958, Nov 12, 2019

Hello, I am a 59 year old male from Ireland. My seizures began shortly after receiving a 3 phase electric shock. I am convinced the two are connected and wonder if anyone out there has experienced similar? I have undergone scans etc and there is nothing showing up as to cause of my seizures.
Overnight my life has changed,
as in Ireland you cannot work machinery after two seizures. So I am out of work and had to sell my car. This has been a heavy blow and hard to get my head around, for now I cope with the aid of antidepressants and of course anti seizure medications. Hope to find someone going through something similar.
Good luck to you all.
Gerard Gannon.

@bern1958 Hello Gerard,

I'm sorry to hear of the dramatic change in your life after receiving a 3 phase electric shock. Was this an accidental shock (as opposed to a treatment for depression)? Do you mind sharing your age?

Has a doctor prescribed any anti-seizure meds to help you?

In the U.S. after you are seizure-free for a number of months (six months in some states) you can once again start driving and resuming normal activities. Is this true in Ireland as well?

I would like to invite @jakedduck1 to join in this discussion. I look forward to hearing from you again.

Dear Teresa,
I am 59 and received 3 phase electric shock accidentally, up until then I was in perfect health. I experienced my first seizure 2 weeks after the shock, my wife woke up at 5 am to find me rigid beside her and barely breathing. She carried out CPR and mouth to mouth. As this was my first seizure meds were not prescribed. Meds were only prescribed after 2nd seizure; levetiracetam 500mg, escitalopram tea 10 mg.
After electric shock and prior to my first seizure I experienced blurred vision and some memory loss.
The law in Ireland is 1 year seizure free before driving again.
I really appreciate your response and support. Kind regards, Gerard.
