Pneumococcal Vaccinations against pneumonia
Has everyone on this site over 65 received the 2 pneumonia vaccinations? Have you found them effective in keeping pneumonia at bay? I have done the first but am adverse to vaccinations and am due for the second one (PPSV23) and have been putting it off. Any thoughts? Kate

@alleycatkate Hey Kate, I got both the flu and the 1 pneumonia shot last fall and was hospitalized this past spring due to having both at the same time! Was told there are so many strains of flu and pneumonia and it could have been worse. We're all different tho...
@alleycatkate Hi. I didn’t even know there were two pneumonia shots until I had a Medicare physical. I will be getting the second one at the end of the month. I don’t know if you have ever had pneumonia, but I did, and it took me a long time to recover. At this point in life I am not giving it a second thought. (Irene5)
@alleycatkate I have had both.
They do help.
Don’t be afraid!🥰
I've had both and last week had the flu vaccine, which I get every year. I've never had any problems. I have bronchiectasis, but no MAC.
@alleycat Hi Kate, I'm 66. I received the first shot and was told there was a time gap before receiving the second one. I believe I'm due for the second one this year. I've never had pneumonia and don't remember the last time I had flu (maybe a mild one 30+ years ago). But I get flu shot every single year after I turned 50 without fail. With less than perfect lungs, I'm not taking any chances.
Alleycatkate. I had both shots last week and had a reaction. I had headache, low fever and very bad muscle aches that lasted a week or so. Even so I would recommend getting the shots. I was hospitalized a couple of years ago with pneumonia and almost died. It took me a long time to regain my strength after that. I am 71 and get the flu shot and pneumococcal vaccines every year in late September. I have bronchiectasis and Mac and will be starting the Aricayce on the 2nd of October. Nurse is coming to my house for the presentation of product and care. I will keep everyone posted as to my progress on the medication.
@sounder27 Thanks for your response. Yes...I had pneumonia 2 years ago and it was pretty awful. It sounds like yours was drastic! I am surprised to hear that you get the pneumococcal vaccines every year as I thought they were supposed to last 10 years? Maybe we are talking about a different shot. I am due the second follow up shot after last years shot. I usually do not get vaccines (no flu) but I think you are right that pneumonia is nothing to fool around with. I think I just needed a push. I hope you do well on the Aricayce.. Good luck and do keep us posted. Kate
Alleycatkate. I don’t get the pneumonia shot every year. Just the flu shot. The pneumonia shot I got this year was due as I hadn’t had one in awhile. Doc keeps track.
Thanks @ling123! Sounds like you have a great immune system and health. I am pretty proactive but have an aversion to vaccines...which I need to get over. Thanks for your imput! Kate
@marilyns ...Thank you. I have both MAC and Bronchiectasis (mild) but from everyone's response, I will get the 2nd shot. Thank you for taking the time to respond. Kate
