Nausea control
I have a MAC infection diagnosed in January 2019 and have been on Azithromycin, Bactrim and Ciprofloxacin and have gotten along with pretty well until about a week ago. Have developed continuous nausea about 5 days ago. My doctor prescribed Zofan to control it but it doesn't help much. Any suggestions as to how to get through this. I can barely eat and function. I am tempted to stop the meds because I can't go on for another 5-6 months like this. Any suggestions.

@jkansas66 Wow that's miserable. I've been on the big 3 for 11 months and was having similar issues, so the doc switched me to azithromycin which helped. I also tried a few things that have helped. Years ago I got a bad case of food poisoning with horrible nausea. My physician at the time recommended flat room temperature Coca-Cola, nibbling on raw apples (skin and all) and pretzels os saltines. The idea was to never have an empty stomach. As the symptoms lessened I was able to add other food gradually. Also, there are other antinausea meds your doc can try.
Jkansas66 I can SO identify with you.
I was DX in 2015. I was immediately given the BUG 3. I have literally NEVER been so nauseated. I lost 40 lbs in 3 months and stopped the meds FOREVER!
My second opinion dr said.... “For you the meds are worse than the disease”!
BTW... I am MAC. Free as of April, 2019.
I don’t think I ever had it!
I fully understand everyone is different .
God bless and listen to your gut!
There are times when I question my diagnosis. There were what they called "Emphasematic changes" on my check x-ray when I went in for a physical last year. So that started this freight train of events that lead to a MAC diagnosis. My only symptoms were a bit of heaviness in my chest and getting more out of breath than usual when I would try to run. I had no coughing, congestion in lungs, fever or any of the other things I have read about on this blog. The sputum culture came back positive so that's what they are basing everything on. When you had the second opinion, did they do another sputum culture?
jkansas66 ……. I'm from Kansas also so I'm just jumping in here to say, for goodness sakes, just ask them to definitely do another sputum test. Sometimes you have to tell them what you are there for. Believe me...….. Where in Ks are you -- I'm down in the SE corner
That I agree with No one knows your body like you.I do not think I have MAC either, I have my second appointment in August and I will see what the Dr. says. I have refused pills at this point and the way I feel now I will refuse them again. This is my own opinion. I will post the report as soon as I know it, Thank you and good luck with yours.
I live in the Wichita area. I see my infectious specialist on Tuesday so I will definitely bring up this topic.
