Controlling Tinnitus: What works for you?

Posted by scottk @scottk, Jul 1, 2019

Hello: Has anyone on this site had any luck with controlling tinnitus? I see certain things advertised but always sceptical. Any thoughts/ideas?

No side effects at all. And it's not even expensive.

Give it about 3 months. You can get it pretty much anywhere that sells dietary supplements, I get it here: https://www.vitacost.com/vitacost-taurine-1000-mg-100-capsules

Let us know if it works for you.

Bob: One a day at 1000mg?

I take 2 in the morning on an empty stomach with a glass of water, and one sometime later in the day.

I read in a few places (including pubmed) that people have taken 3,000mg a day with no noticeable side effects. I could go more, but I wanted to be conservative.

I've been doing this for a couple of years now, and since I found this thread, I have noticed that most days are just the softest hiss, some days are quiet, and I've had no actual ringing days. But like I said, my tinnitus has always been variable. But before the Taurine, they have never been this quiet.

It worked very gradually for me and the longer I'm on it, the better it is working.

I'm used to ignoring it, so every time I read this thread, I stop to listen. Today the left ear is completely quiet and the right ear has the slightest hiss. I need a quiet room to hear the hiss.

Thanks Bob: I have an order coming tomorrow so I will follow up and let you know how it works.

Give it a good try, and remember, if it works like it did me, it will be so gradual, you won't realize it.

For me today the ears are perfectly quiet. Before Taurine, that never-ever happened.

A little hiss today. But there are thunderstorms out west, and years ago, that would often bring on full blown tone along with the crickets.

I think the longer I'm on the taurine, the quieter my ears become.

Of course, there might be different things that work for different people.

I've read a couple of reports on pubmed (National Institute of Health) that to my non-trained in the jargon of medical terms seems to indicate that taurine does indeed have a positive effect on tinnitus. None seem to be as long-term as I've been taking it.

Good luck.

@stites

I'm looking for information that helps dealing with hearing loss but more so tinnitus. I have changed my diet, added supplements and the use of a hearing aide. The tinnitus is a life changer and forced me to retire at age 62 from my teaching job with special needs kids. I'm heartbroken and struggle daily to continue living a normal life. I have been to many doctor, acupuncture, meditation yet to find relief. Please if anybody can reach out here with suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, D

@sites Hi Welcome to our group of caring people who give suggestion on what helps them . I have had tinnitus most of my life It is a terrible problem Mine is quieter when I don't do dairy products but hard aged cheese is alright . Skim milk seems to be o.k. but not lo fat. I have tried Lipo Flavanoid in the past that helped while on it but its expensive . For me also I found when I keep active I am not bothered with it as much. Sorry this is all I can tell you . Hopefully others will chime in .

That must be so frustrating to have to retire from a job you love due to this condition.

I'd like to introduce you to fellow Connect members @bobbyboomer @nurseheadakes and @scottk as they have experience with tinnitus and may be able to offer you support.

Back to you @stites what have been some of the suggestions give to you by doctors?
