Push-ups to ease depression

Posted by aliali @aliali, Jun 27, 2019

I heard that it is effective to do push ups in order to ease depression. I have some spontaneous questions. How many push-ups should I do daily? What schedule is good to follow; I mean if I am supposed to do 100 push-ups a day, then how many should I do in the morning and how many at evening etc. I need guidelines about this matter

You can do pushups against a wall also and they accomplish the same release of endorphins that help your body balance out the normal chemistry in our body. Exercise everyday, even just walking is good.

Hello @aliali

I agree with @stsopoci that any exercise you do is just great for depression. I did find a Youtube video about push-ups against a wall. You might want to check with your doctor before trying a new exercise program,

Hi, @aliali - here is a Mayo Clinic article on exercise and anxiety and depression that might be helpful https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/depression/in-depth/depression-and-exercise/art-20046495. This article also addresses exercise in Other Steps You Can Take https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/depression/in-depth/treatment-resistant-depression/art-20044324.

@aliali - have you tried out the push-ups yet to see if they make a difference for you, depression-wise?

Hi @aliali. I prefer to have guidelines around physical exercise/rituals too. It helps me to stay disciplined. I think the amount of exercise you do depends on how much you already work out and if your muscles have the endurance to do pushups twice a day. As the others are saying, wall pushups are sometimes preferable because regular ones are bodyweight exercises that can strain your shoulders.. Personally, as a 20-something who works out for muscle gain and mental health, I'll do 2 sets of 20 pushups (reps) twice a week. So, on Monday I'll do 20 pushups, take a minute long break, then do another 20. then I'll do that again on Thursday. But I think it's different for everyone. Do you have a workout routine already in place or are you interested in starting to become more active?
