Starting on Prednisone - I am not sure
I have been advised to start on Prednisone. My chest x ray showed inflammation and subsequent Bronchoscopy ruled on any specific cause. I am concerned about starting on steroids like Prednisone. My oxygen test showed I do not need Oxygen help though the saturations levels dropped from 96/97 to 92/93 and stabilized there. Would like to get inputs anyone who used Prednisone to see if I am over-concerned about starting on it. Thanks

My husband has used a "tapered" dose of Prednisone several times. There are some side effects but it does help his breathing and he is always glad to get it. Why not try it? If you have any concerns, I'm sure that your health care providers will be glad to answer any questions.
I've been on prednisone for better than two years, dropping form a high of 60 mg to now 7.5 mg. I required it a rare pneumonia, and asthma. The result has been good, but the downside has been a depressed immune system opening me up to bacteria of opportunity. As the tapering has continued my immune system has improved. RELY on the advice of you doctor in this case, and try to have a complete explanation of what to expect. The x ray is indicative of the need for the prednisone - that is what indicated m start, in addition to a blood test CRP, I believe.

There must be an underlying cause for the shortness of breath. The prednisone is to mitigate that issue. you should know the (lung) issue you are dealing with, and the total protocol that you are being given. You will be less concerned the more you know.
Merry, Interstitial lung disease and pulmonary hypertension.. I have extreme shortness of breath but did not need oxygen.

1 Reaction@mayomur, I want to share my 'reverse' prednisone experience.
I took prednisone for 5 years after my liver and kidney transplant. When I was tapered off of it, I began to develop breathing difficulties that have been diagnosed and treated as EOB (exercise induced asthma). Upon looking backward in time, I was able to see that the difficulty that I had experienced with hiking and breathing have always been present to some degree, and I always attributed it to not training enough. It looks like the low dose prednisone had been masking my own EOB.
For me the breathing issues are seasonal and allergy related. I have no other breathing or lung issues. I hope that you are able to achieve some relief from the inflamation.
@suzylulu- SOB is very very hard and scary to have. I've experienced it a lot with having lung cancer. I Do you use inhalers to help?
