Viagra Becoming Less Effective -- 81 year-old Healthy White Male

Posted by santarosajohn @santarosajohn, May 11, 2019

I've taken Sildenafil (Viagra) for about 20 years. It has recently become less effective in producing hard erections. Any thoughts, suggestions, observations will be greatly appreciated.

Good morning John and welcome to Connect,
Obviously there are many causes of ED. Mine is from a half century plus on Seizure medications.
It may be time to switch to another medication like Cialis, Stendra or Levitra.
Taking Viagra for 20 years your no doubt aware this medication might not work or at least not as well if you eat prior to or soon after taking it. You didn’t mention what strength you take. If your already taking the maximum dose (100mg) you could try an injectable (It’s not as bad as it sounds) medication like Trimix and there are others. These naturally work quicker too.
Hope things improve for you,
Jake

Hey John,
Have you started any new medications around the time the Viagra stopped working as well as it did? Any new health problems?

Hello Leonard --

Thanks for your replies. It isn't that Viagra has stopped working -- it's just not as effective as it once was. Part of the change is due to age, I'm sure. My eating schedule around taking Viagra has always been a challenge. I've more or less settled on taking Sildenafil (Viagra) on an empty stomach about 90 minutes before a planned encounter and then eating something about an hour after taking it.

I've been taking 60mg or 80mg -- have never tried 100mg. It's not clear to me that taking more makes a big difference. My Sildenafil prescription is filled with 20mg tablets, hence the dosages I've mentioned here. I have taken Levitra and Cialis in the past -- all three meds seem to work about the same for me. Right now my HMO offers Sildenafil, so I'll stick with that for the time being.

If you or others have additional thoughts or suggestions, I'm listening!

Do you live in California by chance?
I tried cialis and they cost $60.00 each, ouch, and didn’t work. My insurance doesn’t pay for anything. Just make sure you eat after your encounter to ensure maximum efficiency. I guess you need to ask your doctor how to increase its effectiveness.

Hi Jake --

Yes. I do live in California. Fortunately, cost is not an issue for me since my HMO provides Sildenafil (Viagra) to me very inexpensively. My last order of 135 20mg tablets cost $8.35. The pricing was equally good with Cialis when they offered that. They seem to stick with one ED med at a time -- I guess the one they get from the manufacturer at the best price. In the long haul, all three are essentially the same in terms of effect, except for the longer-lasting character of Cialis..
