I want to start a low carb diet. Mayo Diet, Keto? Any suggestions?

I'd like to start a low carb diet. Any suggestions? Anyone familiar with the Mayo Diet? does it work, how did you get started on it? I've learned a bit about the Keto Diet, anybody familiar with that? Thanks!

@lioness I just talked to Judi, she suggested these things

no Keto diet for me, that's a fad thing, cannot keep up with fad diets
30g of carbs is my target
drink four bottles of water a day
no fasting, eat 3 meals
eat 1 fruit, mostly veggies
have the nuts, but small portions, like 8 almonds is a good snack in the afternoon
LoseIt has me targetting 1400 calories to lose 20 lbs by September, that sounds reasonable to me
no rice, no potato chips, no potatoes,
eat a balanced diet, smaller portions

@user_ch53e9c09 Thanks that sounds good I mostly eat this way but stray sometimes I do 3bottles of water so will up that and slack off the potatoes white food you need to stay away from I know thanks here,s wishing us happy eating 😃

I don't like the word "diet" and prefer to using "healthy eating plan". I know some people that swear by the Keto but it's not something I could do. I have to have all my fruits and vegetables.

That's what my medical team said, keto is not something sustainable. But my heart goes out to those with metformin and failing kidneys. I would keto if that were my plight

I forgot to say that Dad smoked cigarettes, along with the rest of the drinking and lived to be 88. His diet wasn't great, and I'm sure he could care less if he could spell keto, lol.

I wonder if the docs and researchers study these kinds of people? Drinking and smoking and living to 80 or more?

I had my walnuts, peanuts, cukes tonight, I sure miss my dad 🙂

When I talk to my nurse tomorrow, I'll get a carb count Target for the 'diet' and share it

I am sorry to hear that you lost your dad. I agree with your amazement of how long a person can live with an unhealthy lifestyle. I'm sure that genetics must play a role in overall general health. I'm guessing that your dad must have also had a strong immune system. Did he get colds, flu, etc. very often?

I'm researching diets again, and came across this Mayo Clinic Radio podcast that is really nice, reviews different types of diets.

If there was one diet that worked for everybody, there would only need to be one diet book.

My entire family is 300 pounds, I'm 179. Back in the 1980s I discovered Atkins, it's now called keto. I lost 50 pounds quickly and have kept it off. I've had blood work done and even my heart/circulation tested and everything is super-healthy. It looks like this diet was made for me.

It's very restricting, I eat fewer than 20 carbs per day, but I've lived longer than my father already and am healthier than I ever remember him being. BTW I'm 73, on zero prescriptions, and have the circulatory system of a 50 year old according to a heart doc. I haven't even had a cold in well over 20 years.

Will it work for you? I can't say. Is it healthy for you? I can't say. Is it harmful for you? I can't say. All I can say is that it is working for me.

I've purchased the Mayo Clinic Diet book recently, begun thumbing through it. All the way back to page 302 the menu guide starts! I was surprised by that. Lot's of behavior modification stuff in the previous 301 pages.... I'm pleasantly surprised that breakfast includes a bagel, lunch includes a turkey sandwich, and dinner includes a small flank steak, 1/2 potato and green beans, even alittle sour cream!

so far today I've had steel cut oatmeal with strawberries and ice tea. I haven't shopped the menu in this book yet, working on that next .
my current diet modifications have been stricter than the menu guide in this book, but I credit a 10 lb weight loss for me this month! 20 more pounds to lose is my goal.

@Erinmfs My breakfast rotation includes oatmeal, either steel cut or Silver Palate rough cut, with berries and a little chopped walnuts, yogurt with berries and some low-carb granola, and an egg with a fiberone English muffin.
Being mildly diabetic I watch carbs and interestingly the silver palate oatmeal has fewer carbs than the steel cut, same amount!
