Magnesium and heart rhythm problems

Posted by EllAmster @ellamster, Apr 17, 2019

Dear all.
I already posted something on magnesium in another group, asking if the tablets i was advised to take could have to do with some problems I am experiencing. But I thought I would post it here too.
I have a heart rhythm condition that sometimes really acts up. I had a TIA years ago, followed by my heart stopping less than a year later. So I am under supervision of a cardiologist.
But since I also have a bowel condition (sigh) my doctor told me to take 2 magnesium tablets a day, making a total of 1500 mg. per day. She said I could take even 6 tablets if I wanted to, because there are no side effects. I just heard that there can be, and I wonder if anyone of you has any experience with magnesium and a heart condition, and how this makes you feel.
I would love to share thoughts on the subject since I am not feeling very well ever since I started taking 1500 mg. of magnesium per day over two weeks ago. I called my doctor but they told me there are no side effects. So well, I thought I needed a few more thinking caps.

Magnesium is the main ingredient of milk of magnesia- think about this what is MOM used for - constipation. I found it caused diahrrea - so take 2/2 a tablet. Cannot imagine what 1500 would do.

@kathe626 That is MOM but there are so many different types of magnesium out there . Malete,Theronate, Oxide,Citrate and more. I take Mag.Malete for my fibromyalgia. So you just have to do your research on what you want to use it for.

@Ellamaster I had a triple by pass in 1996 and take magnesium for my fibromyalgia As I said in my post here it depends on the type of magnesium you are taking. Mag. citrate is usually for constipation but I wouldn't take that much as you are depleting your body of electrolytes . That maybe why you don't feel allright . Research what you are using it for . Talk to your Dr. also tell him how you feel.

Magnesium citrate is for constipation.
Magnesium taurate is for heart issues.
U must take Vitamin D3 with magnesium taurate for heart health.

If you need to take magnesium for the heart then you should be taking Magnesium Taurate 400mg 3 times a day. This what my cardio doctor told me to take

My cardiologist told me the best magnesium to take is magnesium glycinate. I take 1 400 mg twice a day.

I have become intolerant of Magnesium Glycinate and all other forms as well, even Threonate, and cannot tolerate even 1/8 tsp powder. As a result, I wake with racing heart and fierce leg and foot cramps that I cannot work out easily. Any suggestions?

@lifewisemap I'm sorry to hear about the magnesium problem Have you had blood work to see if you even need magnesium ? You should have lab work done to see if you even need magnesium. My lab results showed I needed Vit D so Dr put me on more D and this would be so for your mag. count . If you are within normal range you maybe overdosing yourself and your body is trying to tell you , Have your lab work done first before taking any Vitamins and minerals.
