Best Shower heads for MAC

Hi Steve. I have one of your shower heads and I love it. It is pretty heavy but the only one that minded was the plumber. I was having other work done so he installed it. I do wish you had one with hand held but now I understand why you don't. My question is, do you need to soak in vinegar? I was going to do it tomorrow, but now I may not.

Hi Steve...I'm feeling somewhat confused by your info...Dr Falkingham, Mac guru, Microbiologist who speaks at National Jewish, claims with his research that bleach will kill MAC if showerhead is soaked in it on a regular basis...He also claims that amicron filter 0.2 size will not allow passage of MAC...he has proven this with his research.....

If we make the assumption that NTM is in the water and the Shower Head in standard form allows it to accumulate and grow due to the enclosed "Greenhouse" effect, by opening Shower Clear after each shower would greatly reduce the chance of any build up. As a preventative measure, to spray a Vinegar based product into the open shower head is fine for extra protection. I wouldn't remove the Shower Head though. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Hi Jennifer. Yes, no and maybe. Will Bleach kill MAC? Yes. Is it a poison and dangerous? Yes If you splash it in your eyes or breathe in the fumes, is it dangerous? Yes. It is clearly stated on every bottle. Will it clean the inside of a Shower Head that you cannot see inside of test on a daily basis? Inconclusive at best. Common sense says no. You cannot be assured something is clean that you cannot see. He also suggests doing so once a month. What happens on day 20? 25? 40? etc. The answer is, you do not know. Shower Heads do not come with an expiration date or a gauge to tell you when they become toxic. And, taking down your shower head once a month? I don't think so. Then we get to filters. I go back to yes, no and maybe. Why because again of their changing and not knowing when they are filled and doing more harm than good. Also, The 'filter' in a consumer setting just looks like the perfect substrate for bacterial growth. If anything - it would just make matters worse as it would provide a lot of surface area for bacterial adhesion/growth. Mycobacteria are really small (about 1 micron in diameter) so pretty much any filter that would exclude mycobacteria would have very limited flow rates. I hope this helps. I have a shower clear shower head; what sort of disinfecting do you recommend after each use?

Not trying to be argumentative here, but if I am reading the study correctly, the shower head was simply used as a convenient way to house and later access the swabs used in the study. No comparisons were made between it & any other heads, nor can I find any conclusions drawn about whether bacteria grew there. Am I missing something?

Hi Sue. No argument either. Rather, let me clarify. Scientific studies cannot endorse product. They came to me because they were fascinated by the design and the ability to see the inside as opposed to not being able to see inside. With all the other Shower Heads and not one Manufacturer mentioned, they had the task of having to cut open and test. The study also did not suggest to go and buy XYZ brand and clean with bleach monthly. Shower Clear gave them the ability to streamline the process. The swabs were to imitate/substitute a place similar to an enclosed unit to grow NTM and test. Those units were closed for a period of time for the NTM to populate. The message is clear that if you can have the ability to open after every shower, you have the ability to clean/ameliorate daily. Something you cannot do in a traditional design. The choice goes back to a basic theory. Would you rather know and see inside your Shower Head and be able to clean daily with the flip of a latch or guess? I hope this helps. We are currently being used in 2 Major Hospitals with more on the way.
