knee replacement allergy

Posted by denver @denver, Mar 15, 2019

I've had constant pain since my TKR 6/17. I've now found I'm allergic to cement and moderate allergy to nickel. The KR is coming loose, and is unstable. I need a custom made joint that will take 10 mos to make. Has anyone gone through this?

I have severe allergies to gluten, nightshades. After a failed TKR, I've been tested with allergies to the bone cement and possibly nickel. Now I need to find a surgeon who can do this type of revision. It's been a nightmare for 2 years of constant pain, swelling. Now the hardware is coming apart.

Hi @denver and welcome to Connect. You may have noticed I moved your post to your original post about being allergic to your knee replacement so that your discussion with others can be found in one place. Simply click VIEW & REPLY in your email notification to find your post.

I wanted to introduce you to fellow Connect member @gutthookd who has mentioned allergies to knee replacement's in the past and may be able to offer you support.

Back to you @denver, is there anything you can do that will limit the pain while you wait for the custom made joint?

I would like to know if anyone who has had knee replacement still has burning pain after 25 days?

@auntb1947 I had pain for about six weeks that actually brought tears to my eyes. Then it suddenly went away! I have been great ever since.

@denver Would I be correct in assuming you are in Denver? If you were close to Boston I would recommend my surgeon. I have not had that problem but I suspect he would be a good one for this type of problem. He was one of the developers of the Conformis knee, and he really is tops.

What symptoms did you have? I had knee replacement in May of 2019. Since then I have had constant pain, numbness in leg including foot. I suspect that I, also, may be allergic to the cement.

My gate was bad from a bad break three years ago even with many hours of therapy. Dr. Quigley just asked if I was ready. With my insurance it is covered in Missouri. United health Care saved my life.

Am sorry to hear of your pain; so many people seem to experience that. I have had 2 TKR (3 yrs apart). First was perfect. Second is pretty good but definitely not perfect. Pain has not been my issue. But the second TKR has had leg numbness (not in foot) since surgery 1.5 yrs. ago. I cannot get a good explanation for this. I think the numbness may have decreased a little bit (?) I also had the tight band and every 6 months it seems to improve so now it is not much of an issue. While I do not understand the numbness, I have to admit it does not prevent me from playing a racquet sport which is key to my "mental recovery". A new development which is concerning in 2nd TKR is that sometimes that leg hesitates for a nannosecond when I am running. It is (I think) either nerve damage or pinched nerve? I always wonder if nerve damage caused the numbness? I am now going to PT to work on better balance (which had never before been a life issue). And going downstairs is something I must concentrate on to smoothly best coordinate my legs. I always wonder if the first TKR had no after effects because I still had the other normal knee. But with 2 TKRs, is one bound to experience a few issues on balance/coordination? Again, I am very happy I can play Pickleball. Such fun. But am concerned about balance.

I have had two knee replacements and need a third.... 1st in January 2018, lasted a year and three months, it hurt constantly, when the doctor went in to replace it, the bottom portion literally fell out. With the second one he put in of course it has longer stems and it felt great for the first month, then it started hurting and it’s now been a year and seven months, and hurts just like the first one did! When I go into a grocery store, I have to hold onto to a cart in order to make it all the way around the store. When I go to the restroom I have to use a handicap stall, or hold onto something to push myself up, I cannot just stand up. When I went to Mayo Clinic I told the doctor I realize my name will never be like I am 30 again, all I want is for it to stop hurting all the time. I need my right knee done so bad, but I swore I would not do that until my left one didn’t hurt any longer. Hopefully Dr. Clark in Arizona can do something just to make the pain go away.

Hi lonna66: I am sorry to hear about your problems. I am with you. I am experiencing the same issues you are. My left knee was done exactly a year ago and I am still having pain and numbness and the surgeon says it takes a year to 18 months for the pain and numbness to go away. My second knee was done 5 months ago and I am having pain but I feel the pain in my left knee is worse than the knee done five months ago. I cannot sit on a toilet seat. Just like you I need to hold on to something and hence need to use a handicapped toilet. The same when I go to the store for shopping. I need a crat to hold on to. This really limits my movements. Now I have to do a third surgery, my rotator cuff tear and it is my right dominant shoulder and I don't know how I will manage sitting on a toilet and getting up as I need to use both my hands to sit and get up. I am in a real dilemma. Please pray for me.
