Has anyone had a tight band feeling after total knee replacement?

Posted by mhort1213 @mhort1213, Feb 28, 2019

I am 8 weeks post TKR and have had this very tight band around my knee since week one. My Dr at 6 wks says it is normal and will go away. Has anyone else had this and did it go away and when?

Hi I had TKR on Jan.8,2019. I have experienced the rubber-band tightness. I also had MUA on February 27th and I am still experiencing the stiffness of the knee as well as the tightness. I have an appointment with my surgeon this week, not sure if he is going to suggest I have arthroscopic surgery to do a clean up or if he will suggest going back into the knee. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do.

@lynnwade54 Wow, we are almost identical in our dates! I had both done on Jan 7th and my MUA on Feb 25th. Yes lots of stiffness and tightness and pain started coming back. Just met with my surgeon yesterday for my concerns. We discussed the fact that my home and clinic PT have been vigorous and he believes I need to back off the PT for 2 weeks to let the inflammation settle and heal. I'm continuing my stationary biking and some of the stretching and strengthening exercises. Staying away from over bending and aggravating the knees. Doing a recheck in 2 weeks to see if this helps. Let me know what your Dr suggests. Take care!

I am 8 months out and I still have tightness. Diagnosed with CRPS, getting treated early for this, so far so good. My doctor also told me it was normal, I guess it was not for me.

What is CRPS? And what is the treatment?

There is a board you can look at and participate in. CRPS is “complex regional pain syndrome “ check out on Google.

I’m 7 weeks post TKR and experience the tight knee band across the lower half of the knee. It feels like I break thru the binding whil doing PT only to have it come back again. Also, my knee bend back and lock during the night. Seems as though my ligaments? In my hamstrings tighten up. I’ve started walking in the pool and this seems to be Lessing. Thanks to the posts on “knee band” experiences I feel better as others had no such experience.

This is very aggravating, I woke up this morning to experiencing a clenching feeling in my knee. It feels as though metal is clenching both sides of my knee and numbness is around the bottom of my leg. I have been trying to exercise it to get some relief, but has not been successful. My knee is still very swollen and hot, I have been icing it still no relief. Has anyone experienced this metal clenching in the knee. Please can anyone help!
I am going to address all of these issues with my doctor tomorrow.

Do you have a lot of pain with CRPS? I don't have much pain, just tightness. The band feeling is usually less when I first get up and then tightens with increased movement. It's more aggravating and limits movement than painful. I looked on Google and from what I read, it doesn't seem to fit my symptoms. What are your symptoms and treatment?

For me, deep achy, pins and needles, on the knee area were primary main pain symptoms. Now it’s swelling, hot feeling on knee, spontaneous piercing. My treatment consists of nerve blocks (two so far), Flector patch, cream. I’m am doing much better then when I was first diagnosed. Doctors say treating early is key. If you read others stories you will see how many have continuous pain, I’m just praying the pain doesn’t spread to other areas ,

Thanks for your response. Sounds like you may have something different than I am experiencing since you have more pain and don't have the tight band feeling...correct? Glad to hear the treatment is helping you and pray that it doesn't spread.

I have been having this very same issue. My first and left knee was done October 2018.. I have had this tight, rubber band sqeezing sensation since the numbness went away. Surgical numbness.. I still have numbness around that knee. It doesn't hurt but drives me nuts at times.. It hasn't changed in severity either. It's been 6 months now and I am over it. I am considering dry needling to see if can loosen up whatever is causing this sensation. My physician also says it will go away some day. I had my right knee done in December 2018.. it feels more normal.. no tightness post op. I would appreciate and advice help.. My range of motion is excellent in both knees. Thank you
