Recipes, Food Tips, Healthy Eating & More

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Feb 22, 2019

Some of the members of the Gratitude Discussion Group were interested in having a place to share recipes and food ideas. I’m hoping that we can use this thread as a place to have that kind of discussion. I’d love to hear your ideas for quick meals, comfort food, healthy snacks, and more.

Personally, I’ve just been through a bad reaction to one of my medications that left me with a very queasy stomach. I would love to hear ideas – or recipes – that might be used when you need to get something on your stomach, but don’t want to overdo it.

Hopefully, this thread will even be a place where we can share recipes for special treats and yummy rewards. It doesn’t always have to be healthy!

I’d love to hear from members who have been part of other discussions AND from new members who have good ideas, recipes and food tips to share. I’m excited to see who might start us off here with an awesome food suggestion!

@sueinmn The sun coming in the windows lately is telling me maybe it’s time to peel that protective covering of dust off everything! After two years of not being able to do much of any house work the dust will be like an archeological strata! LOL. It would have to be pretty bad for my husband to start dusting too!! He’s been great at cleaning the bathrooms and doing the vacuuming in my ‘absence’ but the deep cleaning and dusting are just not in his vision.

He is however, the head cook in the house ever since he retired 13 years ago! He’s even made his own cookbook of easy recipes with healthy foods; Good fats, low cholesterol, whole grains, fresh veggies, non-processed foods, etc... I’m thinking maybe I should send some of those to Jake to get him to be at peace with his stove. LOL

@loribmt Your husband's cookbook sounds like it could be publish-worthy! That's something we all need.

I have noticed that when I am at my computer I sneeze a lot. I think the "sheer drapes" in front of the computer desk need to be laundered but the last time I did that one of them fell apart! They are getting old but I don't want to replace them now, we paid a lot for them to be custom made and are really hoping that this will be the year we finally move to a smaller home.

@contentandwell My husband has made several copies of the book over the years and given to friends and family members. The recipes are serious but the cookbook is hilarious. He always writes a bio on top telling ‘the story’ behind the recipes; Lizzy Borden’s Spatchcocked Chicken, Sam and Ella’s Laced Salmon...you get the idea.
The drapes...sometimes just tossing them in dryer on air fluff with a dryer sheet is enough to freshen them up! At least they’d hold up enough until you move. Timing is everything, isn’t it? We’re in the same boat with some carpeting...

I appreciate the thought however to be honest I think the only way I will ever feel at peace with my stove is the day I see it in the city dump. Now that would really bring me the greatest joy of my life.
Take care,
Jake

@jakedduck1 The oven and stove top is supposed to make life simple for you. Is doing without better? What would your cook think or your new roommate? Nothing like fresh hot foods especially in the 5 food groups, delish! Toni

@avmcbellar
Doing without is definitely better, absolutely, positively, no question about it!!!
My cook usually fixes junk at her place.
I'll get my roommate a barbecue if that pans out.
People with seizures are better off using a microwave. As far as my 5 food groups are concerned I get candy, pies, pastry, cake & cookies from the store, bakery or cheesecake kitchen (surprise, I was their first customer over 40 years ago) and my friends also provide me with goodies and real food too.
No need for a stove. I think I only bought it because at the time there was a lady living here for a few months and she cooked.
And that's the way it is,
Jake

@jakedduck1 Sounds like it is certainly better without when your favorite foods are made outside your home. No surprise there to find out you were first in line to order and a customer for 40 years. Who needs meals on wheels? You get the foods you want at the time you want them. Plus, you won’t get the daily fuss of cleaning that comes along with cooking. The food smells in the house may be missed. There is nothing like the fresh smell of pies and cookies in the oven but a car air freshener can make a great replacement. Hope the barbecue can be used year round. Keep the stove since it matches with the other appliances. Used it to complete the look of your kitchen. And if it is ever needed it is available. Toni

Oh Jake, I feel your pain! I too have a new, supposed-to-be-shiny black & stainless gas range. I'll be watching to see what tips you get - I have learned to keep all food prep away from the stove (I used the old one as an extension of my minimal counters) but other than that, I must clean it every day.
@loribmt You cracked me up when you said " I always look at dust as a protective cover anyway." I didn't realize how much cover our living room had until my husband got fed up and started dusting - I can probably count the number of times this has happened in 49 years! But I'm grateful because he also moved all the furniture and steam-mopped all the hardwood floors. Ta-da! Spring cleaning done in that room.

@sueinmn
I don't dust very often, I don't want to disturb my friends.
Would you mind letting me borrow your hubby for a day or so?
PLEASE!!!
Take care,
Jake

@loribmt, @jakedduck1, @sueinmn, I'm laughing too and loving the "dust as a protective cover". Despite the highly advertised windows installed to cut down dust, in my windy, dusty area, they seem to make no difference a'tall!

Sue, So after a short 49 yrs, Congrats on getting your fella' trained!! If I send air fare, will you ship him my way for some spring cleaning??????

@loribmt
Hi,
I do the same with dryer sheets on clothes that I have only worn for a couple of hours that would normally be dry cleaned or put in the dryer with Dryell.....another option for curtains
