Recipes, Food Tips, Healthy Eating & More

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Feb 22, 2019

Some of the members of the Gratitude Discussion Group were interested in having a place to share recipes and food ideas. I’m hoping that we can use this thread as a place to have that kind of discussion. I’d love to hear your ideas for quick meals, comfort food, healthy snacks, and more.

Personally, I’ve just been through a bad reaction to one of my medications that left me with a very queasy stomach. I would love to hear ideas – or recipes – that might be used when you need to get something on your stomach, but don’t want to overdo it.

Hopefully, this thread will even be a place where we can share recipes for special treats and yummy rewards. It doesn’t always have to be healthy!

I’d love to hear from members who have been part of other discussions AND from new members who have good ideas, recipes and food tips to share. I’m excited to see who might start us off here with an awesome food suggestion!

Back again,
I have a question, what do you think the best cookware is? or at least something good. I should get some for the guy that’s coming to cook for me. I was thinking of “all clad” is that stuff any good?

Leonard....all clad is very expensive and you don't cook that much anyway. Just get some stainless steel or aluminum nonstick cookware
CAPHALON is decent. I'm assuming you will be ordering this online. I like to feel the weight of pots and pans and skillets and I often buy them at Marshalls or HomeGoods. You don't need to pay an arm and a leg for this stuff unless you're a gourmet cook and we all know you are not.
Skillets should be non stick. But you can get pots that are stainless steel or aluminum and good quality and they don't have to be non stick. Get at least 3 sizes of skillets...small, medium, large. Same with pots with lids. You may need or have a larger pot for pasta and at least one heavy duty pan for roasts which you may have. I dont like ceramic myself.
No need to buy all clad or professional equipment unless he is moving in lol.
Get a good knife if you dont have one.

Your son sounds like a gourmet cook compared to me. If you asked me to make you a smoked old fashion I’d probably stick it in an old fashion glass and stick it in the oven until it smoked. Sorry about the orange zest but I don’t have the zest to zest an orange, whatever that is. A normal dinner at last and it sounds good too. Wish I was there to enjoy the other half. Not half of the old fashion though. I’ll let you savor all of that.
What could possibly be more normal than candy, ask any kid. I think everybody if they answered honestly will say that candy was as normal as it gets or at least one of the five best food groups, Candy, cookies, cakes, pies & pastries. That has to be as normal as normal can be.
I will enjoy time with my cooking friend that’s for sure as long as it’s not anywhere near the kitchen. Well I guess I better go get some cashew chicken that I slaved over last night, what a horrible awful experience that was. First time I used my new stove. Talk about a stupid thing to buy and a total waste of money. First time I used the stove in at least two months and I hope it at least twice that long before I use it again. I planned on just having some nuts for dinner and I had some but I was still hungry so foolishly I went in and fixed something. Next time I’ll go to bed hungry. I need to have my head examined or move in with you and then you would need your head examined.

Oh use the dang stove for crying out loud!. We actually have a small smoker for the bourbon but you can put some small food in there like salmon
He loves his smoker..the taste is pretty neat and you get a slight smoky aroma

Use the new stove or your candy will disappear. And never go to bed hungry or angry.

The main reason I don’t use the stove is because it’s dangerous for people with epilepsy. My mom was washing the dishes one day and she left to go do something else and I stayed there and had a seizure and nearly drowned. The had the stove but fortunately I didn’t get near it. They are dangerous for pyrite Epilepsy. I almost always use the microwave mainly for safety reasons. I had some smoked salmon and turkey when I was in Canada one Thanksgiving and smoked turkey another Thanksgivingwere everything was very good. Believe it or not I actually used to fix a Thanksgiving dinner but now I’ll just go get some unprocessed unsalted turkey slices and have a sandwich with hot pickles sauerkraut and cheese on it.

Hi Jake,
Why do you need more pots and pans?
I’m sure your moms kitchen was well stocked.
I gave many pots and pans to charity 2 weeks ago. Trying to downsize, and had too much.
If you lived close by you could of had everything.
If you really need stuff, try Salvation Army thrift store, or goodwill store.
Some of the merchandise is new or near new.
Is it hot up your way?

These are the two best pans I have big pot and a large skillet with those little handles on the sides. Kind of deep they are made by Calphalon. Are those two good? It’s not for me but the guy who is coming, he enjoys cooking, the dang fool.

@jakedduck Those look like good pans. I too have Calphalon and I like it. If you need to buy more and can't get to a Marshall's, TJ Maxx or Home Goods, they do sell online too. The young people seem to really like the pans that are copper colored and are non-stick, and they are not too pricey.

Hi fun,
My other pans might be ok but some aren’t non stick some are. I just wanted him to have nice things to cook with. Maybe I should just wait until he gets here and then he can decide and choose from whatever he wants.I burnt some rice in that large skillet like looking thing and it came out easily. If he wants me to wash any dishes, heaven for bid which may or may not happen I want the easiest possible nonstick things made. Preferably ones that you just have to wipe out with a paper towel and then you don’t have to wash or dry the bloody things. Only been in 90s here except for one day when it hit 100 so it hasn’t been bad. Hope your house is coming along okey-dokey but I have a feeling it’s still coming along pretty slowly. If I was a good do it yourself person I come in and help you out but I just make things worse.
Take good care of yourself,
Jake

I know most people prefer dill pickles but I prefer sweet, breat & butter, hot & things like that anything but dill. I don’t see how anybody can choke those god-awful putrid things down. I bet Florida Mary likes those two.
Maybe they go good with dark chocolate.
Take care,
