Cleaning before Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) for Cdiff.

Posted by sandyabbey @sandyabbey, Feb 22, 2019

I’m about to have to have an FMT next week. What kind of cleaning needs to be done before I get home. I have never soiled my bed, but have been vigilant in keeping my bed linens clean. Do I need to blesck all bedding. That will ruin top quilts, but I don’t want to reinfect myself. I’ve had 4 relapses & I’ve been very careful with hand washing & bleaching the bathroom I use. I would love some opinions

@sandyabbey It sounds like you must have relapsed after taking Dificid (fidaxamicin). I went through 4 bouts of Cdiff in 2018 but after taking Difiid last October, I have not relapsed. I didn't bleach blankets or anything like that. One thing I did do last October is discard the pillow I sleep with between my knees. I've had 3 back surgeries and have to sleep on my side with a pillow between my knees. I don't know if that was infected or not, but I tossed it out. Like you, I was diligent cleaning the bathroom. Are you doing the capsules from OpenBiome? That's what I had decided to do if I relapsed again. Please keep us updated after your FMT. I've made it through most of the winter without needing an antibiotic for sinus infections. I wish they would take Clindamycin off the market. I wish you well and have positive results from the FMT. I hope more people give us updates after they do FMT.

I’m having my FMT via endoscopy into the small intestine. I still have to have that awful prep & I don’t understand that. My GI doesn’t want to do it via colonoscopy because last year when I had one he had a hard time. He said my intestine was so many twists & turns that it was not the bast way for me

@sandyabbey I can relate to your last colonoscopy. When I had mine, he couldn't complete the last turn. I ended up having to go to the hospital a week later and have the contrast put through my colon. Two preps a week apart. I'm not looking forward to my colonoscopy this spring. Please do give us an update. Positive thoughts being sent your way.

I’m on vancomycin after my last relapse up until 2 days before my FMT which is Thursday. I stop my vancomycin today. I haven’t been having diarrhea since I started back on the vancomycin. Just one loose stool a day. I was wondering if I’m still contagious at this time. I wanted to wash my sheets the day before but I was wondering if I could contaminate them them them Wednesday night during my prep. Meaning just getting back in bed after the clean out half the night. I don’t anticipate any soils. Should I change then just before I leave for the procedure, ot will they be ok. I could fold another sheet to sleep on over the clean ones, but I didn’t want to re contaminate myself.

I believe you have done a good job with cleaning as you mentioned. Washing material items well with Tide will be sufficient. Also , sounds like you are clear but the Doctor can run a test to see if you are clear. Wishing you the best and stay confident.

Hi @sandyabbey,

Here are some great Mayo Clinic videos and information about FMT:

– FMT demonstrates consistently high success rates for recurrent CDI https://www.mayoclinic.org/medical-professionals/digestive-diseases/news/fmt-demonstrates-consistently-high-success-rates-for-recurrent-cdi/mac-20429966

I was also wondering if you’ve had a chance to see the Gastroenterology & GI Surgery page on Connect? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/page/gastroenterology-and-gi-surgery/

No I haven’t seen that.
